I've only hunted the West side for elk for the past 4 years after I moved over here. I use to bow hunt rocky mt. elk and have had great no problem bugleing them in. I've only hunted these over here with muzzleloader 2 seasons and rifle for 2 seasons. It seems if you bugle at these Roosevelt they run the other way. Is this the norm or just the time of the rut?
-
Try getting right in there kitchen , soft cow meaw, estres cow , then light bugle all in a row ( jim horns tech ) see if that triggers the bull . remember your not the king of the woods he is . Early season the bulls will come in quiet most of the time . Coach
-
they seem to act the same to me :dunno:, weather and people screw ya up here on the west side
-
they are educated on the west side by people who bugle from there pickup while there diesel idles. :bash: you can bugle west side just get close :twocents:

A friend of mine gets an opportunity every year. He doesn't call really at all. He will find the bull he wants and will hang with them for as long as it takes. Eventually the bull will mess up by hanging out in the back. Of course watch the wind.
-
if your muzzle or rifle they will certainly go the other way, the rut is over by that time, in sep during archery however, they bugle, I bugle bulls every year, but all I have killed have been while cow calling, I only bugle to locate, unless the bull is really hot, in which case, normal calling techniques work just fine.... also I hunt really remote areas where not many if anyone else goes, those bulls done get called to 5000000 times a day so they are much more apt to call back... my buddy had them going insane last year near mt adams......... so yes they talk plenty in the sep
-
Hoyt I agree with you but I don't think the elk around Adams are Roosevelt though.
-
adams is still west side, so they are considered rosies, they bugle like crazy in the lewis river, yale and toutle as well, and the coweeman etc, I called in a 6x6 for my buddy in the coweeman last year and he was quiet.... only made noise to the cow call, not the bugle, but my point is, they bugle just fine on the west side during the rut, its funny how it varries though, one ridge over they scream, the next one they dont........ i just got over 200 acres north of kalama to hunt and the landowner said they scream in every draw in sep!!!

The rut isn't over the first two weeks of Oct. Back in the day bow season started Oct. 1st. Bulls can be called in EZ. Been there done that. These Roosevelt's are different then Rockey mt. elk.

From the information i know, everything east of I-5 arnt considered true Rosevelts, Everything west of I-5 are True Rosevelts.. :dunno: I believe they call those on the eastside of I-5 casecade rosevelts per the Record books.. And the elk around MT Adams, They are Rocky Mt. I may be wrong but thats what i was told years back and go by.. :dunno:
Bucklucky what do you think.. AM i wrong? :dunno:
-
Elkpiss that's what I heard as well. Most of the ones east of I-5 are mixed blood Rossy/Rocky Mountain Elk. Those West of I-5 are pure blood Rossy's.
-
The biggest mistake I hear people make is they try to sound like they are the biggest baddest bull around. Usually that's when the herd bull rounds up his cows and runs them into the next drainage. Get in close and try to sound like that satellite bull that just got his butt kicked, then be ready!
I think they moved the "boundary" again this year to the PCT like it was years ago. But yes, as it was stated, the bulls up between Adams and St. Helens are a mix.
-
That's how I try to sound when I'm calling. Like I'm a three legged 3 point with the flu looking for a fight. Sort of like when you're little brother wont stop talking smack to you. You can't help your self, you have to go over and thump on him a bit :chuckle: Basically calling bulls is the same concept.
-
At least a rockey mt. elk will talk back to you when you bugle. ;)

Yep and even better if it sounds like you have a couple of cows with you.

The roosevelts respond well to a bugle if your not in an area that has been over pressured. Usually the second week of archery they are really talking. We tent camped it last year and they were talking all night under the full moon. We were able to buggle and locate one at first light as he blew back at us. We located the bull and coaxed him in with multiple hoochie mama calls. He came right in. One arrow to boiler put him down.

man i cant wait for peaches ridge come sept-8th.... you guys are giving me goose bumps thinkin about it!
-
Get in real tight, that's worked best for me. Our Roosevelts here in SW corner on coast are exceptionally fickle critters though. What works on one seems to scare the next-door bull away.
-
I've hunted the high country of the William O. With little wimpy bugles, I'd get a responce but the big boys wouldn't come in, just talk back. When I got big and bad I would call in nice 6x6's and 7x7's, took some good pictures, played with a bull for 2 hours until the wind changed and I could go in on him. He was a 5x5, through my bugled off two the side and back behind me, he walked by at 20 yds, all by himself, no cows, no spikes. I've called in a lot of bulls that i could have killed, but never could draw a big bull tag. I work the bull how he wants to be worked.
-
Try using a whistle, PS OLt company made one years ago. I've seen plans for homemade version. Sounds like a pushy spike. I've had great luck when everyone else has said the elk are quiet.

I had the Matheny early bull permit last Oct. Great hunt with alot of action.
The bulls would bugle back, but they wouldn't leave the herd unprotected.
I got a nice 5x6 pissed off enough to get within 10 yds of my partner and I.
It was on the opener, and I passed for a opportunity for a bigger bull.
I ended up shooting a small 5 pt on day 8. ???
