Sure, but they usually rip the entire log open. Are there any other grubs or ants left in there, otherwise them might not be back.

yes that's when you know for sure. when they scoop a hole with there paw. that's what i watch for. Rick

Hard to really tell it is pretty torn up. This is about a 10 min hike down a clear cut so not from a human unless they are as dumb as me.

Yes there is BIG black ants in it.

It is possible that a bear did it. Hard to say for sure from the photo. Was there anymore similar damage in the area?

Maybe a big woodpecker? I have seen them on logs on the ground before.

The only thing around was not damage just lot of game trails.

Hmmm.. Makes me think it might be woodpeckers or chipmunks.
