Got up at 3:45 this morning so I could be in a prime bear spot right at daylight. After a short wait, this bear showed up and started munching on false hellebore plants. Because the sun hadn't yet risen over the horizon, the light was marginal, and only 1 out of the 80 or so shots turned out sharp (the second one). I need a better lens!

Great pics. He looks really black in the middle of all that green!
-
Sweet pics, he looks pretty stout. Mark
-
I really like the black/green, looks great!
-
very nice pics, and I agree looks really black against all that green
-
Pretty sweet pictures. I'd say they turned out well considering the low light.
-
Great pic, nice "BLACK" bear.
-
Very nice! That kind of black should be called a different name. Awesome pics.
-
sweet pics, that bear has a cool face
-
Great pictures Jon! Love the colors as well. I would love to see the picture you would get with a better lens!
-
Great pictures Timber, looks like you put some miles on up there between these and the goat pictures.

What a great job anticipating the bear! That vegetation makes for some really nice compositions.
What lens are you using?
-
Great pictures, unique face on that guy, kinda looks like he could grow a frow or something.
-
Nice pics! Looks like that bear is still packin around some of his winter coat...
-
Cool looking brotha bear. His face is really dark. Looks like he is a wolf in a bear suit. :chuckle:
It is cool you can see the leaves that he was chewing on. Very nice pictures. Was he looking at you or just looking around?
-
I appritiate this thread for more than the pictures.
#1 I didn't know what that stuff was called.
#2 more important, I didn't know bears ate it...... :chuckle:

I have him on the hook Tom. He hasn't slept since he held the 400. All I need to do is let him touch it one more time and its a done deal. :) I'll have to check your pics out tonight Jon. Can't wait.

I appreciate this for more than the pics also!!

Doug, you are right, I am losing sleep over it. My plan was to order the 400 2.8 this past weekend, but I chickened out.

He was on to me most of the time. Just wan't sure what or where I was.

You'll have a little buyers remorse for a week or two, but you will quickly get over it.

That's the lens I use! In fact, it's about all I use anymore. You'll love it. Sweet thing about it is that autofocus will still work with either the 1.4x or 2x extenders on it. Some folks say the 2x results in poor images, but when there's a good amount of light it's actually quite good.
-
Man if that is his summer coat I wonder what his winter coat is like. What a fatty!
-
looks like a great bear :chuckle:
-
Great pictures!
If you get the 400 2.8, and have no use for the 100-400 anymore, you can throw it my way. :) I would love the 100-400, just can't swing the price right now. I definitely need a telephoto real soon though.

Interest'un!
I "Googled" Hellebore and read that the plant is extremly toxic. Roots, stalk, and leaves are all posionous, ..... to us at least.

Found this bear again in the same spot this afternoon. He's got a mouth full of cow parsnip.
I got a new lens, but the light was very harsh today (I'm full of excuses). I promise better pics next time.
-
The pictures may not be great, but at least you got to see him again. Probably the same bear alecvg and I saw earlier in the morning. Hopefully you'll have better luck with lighting next time.
