Title: Sheep help needed.....
Post by: pat2bear on July 08, 2009, 03:34:40 PM
Drew a Tieton sheep tag and would like some field scoring help. Didn't know how ignorant I was at it until I tried it. I've lived here my whole life and seen tons of sheep but never gave much thought into the scoring details.  :dunno: (Never thought I'd draw.) Always see them when deer and elk hunting up there but I guess I got kind of complacent with seeing them all the time. Been up to elkstuffers shop and got a basic crash course but more practice is needed. Any pics with scores (net or gross) would be a big help. Or even another website with the same info. Will try to keep the forum up to date on the scouting and the hunt. Thanks.

Just plain Tieton. Any legal weapon. There's only 1 early hunt, no late hunt.

Hey pat2, there is a thread in this other game section called "cali records" that has some pictures of rams and scores.  I've seen some young rams taken out of tieton in recent years so there must be a big one.  I'll let you know if I see one.  Message me if you need any help.

I was over on Cleman a week ago today.  I had a conference in Yakima all last week.  I grabbed a buddy of mine we went up for the day.  I brought glass along but we basically just hiked a few ridges.  44 rams spotted--a few were not too bad.  That is the funnest sheep tag to have I think with all those rams in there.

My hunt'n buddy drew a Missouri river breaks ram tag in Montana. I have been told the next world record is walking around down there. Don't know how to pass on a 195 ram for that 200+. Gona have to know our stuff.

Yeah, well, you are talking in a language I don't even understand.  I hope you get the big one.  Keep us updated.

Those breaks tags are to die for.  195 is a big, big ram to walk by.  I'm fortunate enough to have a pretty good Rocky and if I had that tag you better plug your ears if a 195 walks out!  I sure hope you do it though!!!  Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey sheep tag holders, are you shooting?  :P  Here is my guess:  46+45, 15.5+15.5, 14+14, 11+11, 8+8 = 188

Anyone else want to have some scoring fun?   :yike:

this ram was taken by  a wa. hunter in new mexico...
wonder who it is....

Nice rams.  #1 looks like a mid 170's type ram.  #2 looks like a 180 type ram.  #3 looks like a mid 180's type ram.  That new mexico ram looks like a low 180's type ram to me.  All nice rams.

Bownhead... that was MY tag your buddy drew!! :bash:

Seriously though, its probably the best place to kill a 200+ except for Alberta... but not far behind. There are definitely rumors flying about a world record...but i doubt it... a 203-204 Definitely....

Like said though..you will have to walk by a BUNCH of 185-195 rams before you get to that 200+... unless you guys get lucky!!!

Good Luck Everyone with Ram tags!!!

Post by: popeshawnpaul on July 09, 2009, 04:10:50 PM
I think it's really hard to score rams when they get to 195-205+.  So much of it relies on small differences in mass measurements.  Maybe that's a good problem to have...

Congratulations Pat2bear!
I had that tag in 06 and ended up killing a young ram on the last day of my hunt. I had a great time and wouldn't have changed a thing no matter what my ram scored.
I hunted 9 days with my bow but couldn't get it done and ended killing him with my rifle, with my wife and 7 year old daughter as my guides.
I've spent a lot of time in the tieton on three different sheep hunts(at least 30 days in 06 alone) and had some great video of mine hunt but I lent it to a 07 hunter and have never gotten it back.  :bash:The tieton is a sheep hunt as those rams have lots of cover to hide in. They hang in the pines a lot during the hot part of the day and it made for some great bow stalks! Getting in close wasn't my problem on my hunt it was making sure it was the right ram.
The rams there have good genetics and base sizes usually run 14.5 to 14.75. There were some trans plant rams there that were a little better but they are all gone now.
PM me or give me a call and I'd be more than happy to give you the low down on how to hunt the Tieton.

38+38, 15+15, 14+14, 12+12, 9+9 = 176'

I'm probably too conservative on the length and bases.  Just looking at him I think low 180's.

That's hard to believe.  I guess he must be proportionately larger than he looks in the pictures.  Do you have the individual measurements?

It's a nice Ram but I'm with Pope!!!  :)

the only measurement I could remember was the 17 1/2 in bases. I saw the score sheet. he will be in the record book at 195 0/8
Title: Re: Sheep help needed.....
Post by: popeshawnpaul on July 27, 2009, 08:33:54 AM
To be that big he must have measurements like this:

44+44, 16+16, 15+15, 12+12, 10+10 = 194

It's just hard for me to believe this ram is 44" long and has 16" bases...   :dunno:  It would actually have to be larger than the above measurements because it netted 195 meaning there would have been deductions...   :dunno:

Post by: Slider on July 27, 2009, 04:00:17 PM
Popes right. To net 195 it would have to be over 200? It just doesn't look like a 200 inch Ram.
This Ram nets 195 5/8 official

As I said he WILL be in the next edition of Boone and Crocket record book at 195. I am a little surprised you can't see his mass, I am not a sheep guy and I thought it was something else. His measurements are 40, 17 1/2, 16, 15, 11 1/2, per side that's 200. If you don't believe me check the book when it comes out.

It is the pictures.  I don't think they are flattering for the sheep.  I see that he is massy but from those angles I would never guess 17.5" bases.  Those are really big bases that you never see.  Where was the ram from?  Most sheep with bases that big don't have much of a space between their horns and this sheep does.  Good scorers usually ask where the sheep came from before scoring.  Most sheep from a herd will have similar characteristics regarding mass and length configuration.

It had to be the mass because it certainly isn't long at 40".  I would love to see the kill photos for the sheep.  It really takes multiple angles and/or video to really get a good feeling for how large some are.  Doing it from pictures can be tough, especially mass.  To get a good feeling for mass I prefer to wait until I get a back shot of the horns so I can see the shoulders on them.  Cool ram.

Oh, like Slider said, we never said he wasn't that large.  He just didn't look it from the pictures.  That's why I asked you for the individual measurements.  I wish we could have gotten a few more opinions from sheep guys on these pictures before the answer was revealed.  It would be interesting.

I was looking on the B&C website and they have a similar type ram on there from Montana.  This one scored 199 with 17 5/8th inch bases.  http://www.boone-crockett.org/Images/BIGHORN_robertseelye_600.jpg

That's apples and oranges though.  These are rocky rams.  You shouldn't be looking at pictures of 195" rams prior to your cali hunt...lol.   ;)

Cant a guy dream , If I was on a rocky hunt with a bow I guess i could settle for that ram lol.
