Title: Gun Storage and Humidity

Post by: Pat/Rick on July 08, 2009, 11:21:18 PM: If you are comfortable you should be fine. My situation is a dedicated room for my collection and a de-humidifier plugged in around the clock. I got mine through Target on line store. (I hate the frog owned establishment too) sometimes ya gotta give. i also check in on "the kids" a few times a week to make sure they are getting proper care. I am not actually aware of an ideal % of humidity, If the air "feels" damp, I check. Hope it helps.

Post by: littlebuf on July 09, 2009, 09:37:17 AM: i'll tell ya ice the goldenrod that i put in my safe is sure a good piece of mind, went for a while without one and i always kinda worried since mines bolted down in the garage. but with that heater/dehumidifier i don't worry a bit, and ive got some old timers in there too

the only kicker is your safe has to have a hole in the back for the cord to come through to plug it in.

there are absorber blocks or little tubs available too, but they have to be changed out intermittently...dri-z-air's are good if you have room. i have a couple little stick on blocks that browning makes in mine. it has been fine in the garage for over a year now. no sign of any moisture or corrosion on anything.

I wonder if there is such a thing as TOO dry. I don't think it would be good for the wood stocks.

You don't want a 'humidifier'. You want to run a 'De-Humidifier'.

My gunroom/safe is in the finished basement of the home. I run a De-Humidifier from mid spring through early fall to keep the humidity around 55%. Late fall and winter we use the wood stove a lot for suplimental heat. That dries the air a lot. Keeping the humidity down, proper lubrication of clean guns, has proven well for me for the eight years I've lived there.

i've heard that the fine gun makers over here let their wood dry for 10+ years before they put they finish it as a stock. makes me think that they couldnt get any dryer.

every time i get one of those i throw um in the safe, i figure why not. it will help also

Post by: mazama on July 11, 2009, 12:29:52 PM: I have used the goldenrod for about 25yrs,i have also used the dri z air and got about a pint of water every couple of months out of my safe,i have also used the crystals in the box that change colors and you dry in the oven,goldenrod is the best in this climate.
