Anybody hunting the Muzzle loader in the Skagit 4941?
We hunted that area last year, well I should say tried. The locals wont tell you anything, and if you dont have a raft or jet drive boat getting onto the small islands and penninsula's is impossible without trespassing. Land owners in that are have waterfront rights, so walking a beach-line from a creek just wont do.
Anybody ever have any luck? Sure is a long open season..

Don't let that stop you. If you find a big bull but cant get to it without a boat just post up a help message. I have a sled and would come up and help you drop him, just have to split the loins ;)

I just happen to be one of the locals in 4941 and to be honest with you I wouldn't even bother messing with it unless your a local it just really isn't worth it. But if you do kill one here on a island let me know because I have a jet boat that will do the trick. ;)

I thought you couldnt hunt the islands of the skagit river????I could be wrong thou,check your regs......

Yeah the only area the locals would even talk about is an area called birdseye or birdsview @the north-east end of that elk area.
Ive heard of a full good animals coming out of the south-west areas, but who knows.

Your killing me dude it's Birdsview. If your hell bent on hunting here drive east on hiway 20 turn right on russell rd until you come to a t & turn right again & drive about 1/4 mile to grandy ck. This is the border line of 4941.Grab a pole & your gun and walk down to the river & fish for Steelhead & hope you catch the elk crossing the river. As far as hunting closer to Woolley you really don't have anti hunters but when Archery & Muzzy hunters start shooting elk on private property without permission & wounded elk start tearing down fences landowners get a little pissy.Hell I even know a guy whose house got shot last year imagine that. :iamwithstupid: There's some other Woolley guys on here who may chime in on this unit who can give ya better info than I just did.Happy huntin. :hunter:

If you dont know somebody your probably outta luck...you can always go up and find river access and start looking around for tracks but dont know how productive it would be. Pm me if you want some details or have any other questions.....Justin

I've hunted it with permission from private owners and didn't even see sign last year. I hunted hard and covered alot of ground. Its really a unusual hunt and basically a modified damage control unit.

I've tried hunting it in years past. We never did the boat thing, but did look around and talk to the locals. We saw lots of elk but they were bedded in a grassy area cleared for a developement about a mile upriver from the unit boundry.
Some of the locals were willing to let us hunt, but it was pretty much a "We will give you a call if we see them in the pasture" kinda thing. For us driving from several hours away it didnt work.
If you were a local and had a few locals set up to give you a call if the elk ventured onto thier land then I think it would work well, but other than that I dont know that a person could drive there and hunt for a weekend and expect to see anything they could legaly shoot.
The islands looked very small to me, and I think it would again be a deal where you kinda need to check every day or so till you caught them on the islands. I doubt you could expect to find them there on a consistant basis.

Another local here, its a waste of time unless youve got opening week off and a bunch of private land lined up to hunt on. the elk get smart are cross back over hwy 20 were its closed. I dont know why they even have this hunt, it just creates maham between the hunters and private landowners. The hunt is a land damage hunt, which dont make sense because half the landowners wont let you on to hunt. Its all private, and if you kill one you almost always have to deal with the local wardens on it, getting questioned. Archery hunted it a little a few years ago, but no luck.

I agree with the other locals, I live just a few miles away and don't bother.
