,,,,No :o... You ain't right :yike: Are you nuts or just have a death wish :P.. That's what I hear all the time when we camping at Westport and take the boat(15' with 48 Hp) I fish the bar, and the ocean side of the south jetty, and kill the seabass, lingcod, and crabs( used to be good for salmon before the state closed it for salmon).. This year it dosen't look like I'll be able to make it down there with the motor acting up, and with my daughter wedding coming up (that hurts the wallet) low fund on getting it fixed :'( ...
Today I came up with a great idea to fix my Westport fix on fishing :IBCOOL: I asked my wife what would be the problem of taking my 8' boat with the 5 Hp motor, launch at Westhaven State Park in Half Moon Bay, fish the jetty and get some fish and crabs :IBCOOL: You should have seen the look on her face, until she found out that I am serious...

You would not be the first person to take a dingy out to fish ;) :chuckle:
I say go for it but I also know how much fun that rockfishing is when your catching :P besides they make lifevests so its all good as long as you wear the thing ;)
-
Theres Boats bigger than that in the bottom of the bar, you are nuts :chuckle:

I never hit that water without my life vest on..Infact before I leave the dock, you put your life vest on or you stay on the dock.MY BOAT,,MY RULES..NO IF'S AND'S OR BUTS ABOUT IT.
On top of that I fish so close to the rocks :yike:,,that if anything goes astray, I can just step out and walk back to the truck :IBCOOL:

I used to take my 14' Olympic with 50hp Johnson out Deception pass at full runnin tide in or out, out to Smith Island or Hein Bank. Now, that's not the bar at West Port, but the wind and waves can whip up in a jiffy with about ten miles for me to run back to the launch. There's safe harbor closer but if you know what to look for and know your equipment a good skipper can push the envelope once in a while. Still, the waves out at the jetty can be pretty big for an 8 footer. But a smaller boat could bob like a cork in the swells. Any sign of white caps, and you'll be swamped in no time.
I dunno about you, I wouldn't want to get washed up on those rocks any time though.

Sounds like you haven't had any close calls. If your fishing outside near the jetty in an 8 footer make sure you go alone so you don't put anyone else in that situation. I'm not exactly sure where your talking about, but I've seen a few boats go down and had to look for a few people in my commercial days. Not fun. Have a good time.

A 14' boat with a 50 horse is a hell of a lot different than an 8' boat with a 5 horse. I bet that 5HP wouldn't even move that boat against the strong current that can happen around the bar... :twocents:

TMike,, I have had my share of close calls, both at Westport and Illwaco. I have been fishing that water since 1964, and I am full aware of what that water can do, and will do. When we were fishing commercial the biggest boat we had was a 19' er.. I was running my own boat at 13.. If I was to take my 8' er out the water, and the weather would have to be right. Hell I might not be right, but I'm not stupid :chuckle: :chuckle:
Oh and Jack I'll take that bet

The last week or so it;s been really good fishing on the south side of the rocks. About an hour before high water until about an hour after it;s been good for kings and silvers. Be careful.

Sounds good Tony, be safe and catch a lot. Maybe I'm getting a little paranoid in my older years. I'm a geezer at 46 :yike:

Last week it was nice with a 2 or 3 foot swell but it;s 6 or 8 now and not so safe with steady fog all week.Make sure and read the regulations I think sometime the first week of august the state made it so there is a triangle and you have to be below the lighthouse to fish for salmon it will be closed behind the jetty. You can still fish bottomfish there just not salmon.
-
I know what you mean tmike,,at 52 I get nervous about things I used to do without thinking...( The 8' boat along the south jettey would still be fun :chuckle: )
buckhorn2 I know about the zone around the south jetty in Aug. It ticked me off when the state put that in..I used to catch some big kings along there...I hate the fog,,,the swells,,as long as there some time between them, don't bother me that much,,but the fog can be a real soup factory..

Sounds like a thrill to me. :fishin:

Hunterman it got foggy yestetrday with a good swell and the guy from englund marines brother and 4 friends got rolled over behind the jetty. Some surfers got to them and got them to the beach before the coastguard got there. They were in a 19 foot boat and they pulled it ashore behind the jetty. Fog sucks. Fog and swell is not good.
-
That's one of the reasons I hate fishing in the fog..Can't see the bad swells comming..I didn't get my boat to the shop yesterday like I hoped to, I had to repair fence all day :'( I will get her in there soon..
