I need to step up my camera....I have a little panasonic with 10x zoom that is a cheapy. What do you recommend for all around great outdoor photos that isn't too big, doesn't break the bank, and will take decent after dark photos.

We use a Nikon D90, but it's kinda big and it's a little spendy.  Good camera though!

I looked up the 20D, but don't think I can afford it right now, about $1000 to $1200.

Is there a lower priced quality option?

The big choice is whether to get "SLR" or not.  Entry level SLR's include Canon XTi (or later models), which I own. I ordered 'body only' and put a Tamron 18-200 lens on it. It isn't the 'reach out and touch wildlife' telephoto, but it does a great job for most of the pictures I like to take. I'd give favorable consideration to anti-shake technology.

Ivar, read the reviews on this excellent piece Canon PowerShot SX10 IS 10.0 MP 20X Zoom Digital Camera - MSRP $399.99

It has image stabilization and 20X zoom is awesome. I Have a Nikon D90 but the PowerShot SX10 is my go to pack anywhere and get it in use quick camera. It is a good price too

Actually, I'm surprised that you found a 20D that was priced so high.  They discontinued it a few years ago, so the only ones available are used.  It should only be around $200 or so.  In fact, after they discontinued the 20D they replaced it with the 30D.  Then that was discontinued and they made the 40D.  Then the 50D.  Canon will soon discontinue the 50D and release the 60D.  So, the 40D is really the best bargain right now.  It is known to be exceptional at high ISO, which will help with the low light conditions you want to shoot in.  It will shoot in RAW.  It is, of course, compatible with all the great Canon lenses.  And it should only cost around $650 or $700, in excellent used condition.  Of course, you'll still need a lens to go with it.  But you'll be off to a great start with the 40D body.

The deal I was talking about was a package price with lense. I will look again, and I will try to find the sx10 that killbilly mentioned.

I have an old Canon AEl film camera that has seen about every mountain in NE Washington, but I pretty much quit using it because digital is so much better. I just need to step up to the plate and get a good digital if i can afford it.

Would my old 60-200 lens fit a new canon?

New camera for $379.00. Do you think this is pretty good model? I like the 20x zoom, but how will photo quality compare to an slr?

I also saw this Nikon D80 listed for a lot less than the D90's, is there a lot of difference is the D80 a good camera?

If you are going to purchase a new camera look here.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

http://www.adorama.com/

http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/home.aspx

http://www.cameralandny.com/

The top two would be my first choice. I have purchased from all of them.

I really need opinions on the latest models and which is best as I am living in the stone age of cameras. :chuckle:

I need good zoom ability for live wildlife, clear crisp quality photos, and the ability to get good flash photos after dark.

I quit carrying my great old AE 1 Canon film camera. My current Panasonic point and shoot digital does OK in daylight, but terrible in low light or after dark flash shots on game we recover after dark.

What do you guys think is a good choice and do I need and SLR or is there a point and shoot that provides near proffessional quality.

If you don't want to spend a $1000.00 + your choices are limited to a couple of smaller cameras with good zoom. (Sony,Panasonic) Professional quality pics? I would say no way. In picture quality you get what you pay for!!! Good Luck
