Post by: 7mm ed on August 01, 2009, 07:51:26 PM: just got a mossberg 500 atp 18 1/2 barrel and iam going to use it for yote hunting and would like to know what shot you guys use?

Post by: Straight Shooter on August 01, 2009, 08:15:59 PM: Is the barrel choked or cylinder bore? I recently bought a 20" vented accu choke barrel for my 500. You'll definitely want a controlled pattern out to 50 yards or so.

You'll definitely want to patten shot at different distances. A cylinder bore is typically used by law enforcement/military/home protection because the patten opens up quickly... which is ideal for closer ranges. When hunting yotes with a shotgun, you'll want to look at it similar to turkey hunting... a tighter controlled patten (out to a reasonable distance) to ensure a fast humane kill. A lot of people use their turkey shotgun set-up as double-duty for yotes... usually running a full choke with bismuth shot.

Post by: satchel3006 on August 02, 2009, 12:16:01 AM: i think they make a 24" barrel with a vent rib and choke tubes id get that one so the gun is a little more compact and you could attach sights to the vent rib and you could get a full or tighter choke for it
