Title: calling wrong?
Post by: rudedawg1085 on August 04, 2009, 04:05:19 PM
So this has happend to me the last 3 times iv seen coyotes....i call and call and call to have a yote come walking on in about 200-250 yards, instead of taking the shot i call again for it to get closer but instead it stops and runs back off into the brush...should you call until you see them and have them come walking in orrrr are you spouse to keep calling?

Are you wearing head to toe camo?  Is it possible they are seeing you?  Coyotes are very good at pinpointing sound so if you are calling they will know the exact location you are at.  It might be a shiny gun, your face or hands showing, movement or too much volume.  :dunno:  You could try lip squeaking or being a little patient.

When coyotes are within view, you need to keep sudden or jerky motion to an absolute minimum. Move your hand (with call, I presume) very slowly. Rotate your head very slowly, if turning is required.

Consider a more subtle call, such as a squeaker when coyotes are close. Such are easily heard by a coyote out past 200yds, in calm conditions at least. An additional "squeaker tip" that I got from author Charles Shawley: drill a hole in your bulb type squeaker, such that you have to put your finger over the hole to make it squeak.  That will eliminate or greatly reduce the inadvertent squeaks that come at inopportune moments.

when they get in close just give em a kiss or two or three no need for a squeeker.

Cully Question?

If you can get close enough to give them a kiss or two wouldn't you just kill em? :yike:

Sorry

I don't let them get close at all  :chuckle: If I see em, I'm shooting!

But seriously, you can kiss them into range.

I change up my calls. Sometimes one will work and another time it will not. It also doesn't seem to matter if I'm perfect sounding or not. The wind and how hidden matters to me the most. When I see them and I have time, I shut up. If they need some incentive, that's when you can kiss them in. Also, sometimes dogs have been "trained" and seem to have another sense. Those really piss me off! :chuckle:

Kissing will stop them sometimes instantly, in perfect view, for an excellent shot!
The first time I tried this I could not believe how well it worked.

Inside of 300 yards, if they are moving to me I shut up and let them, if they are headed down wind or hesitating, I squeak em, or some other small sound. If ignorng me I go to pup sounds, pup and pup distress are my most useful sounds. after that birds and high pitched distress.
At 300 or less if they hold up, aint moving for 30-60 seconds, get on em and kill em. coyote kill zone is purty small, if you can hit a 6inch circle, everytime, from hunting positions, shoot.

( I ain't never killed a coyote so don't ask me) :chuckle:

I always watch whats coming in first.se Idaho usually magpies, when the magpie flares I know what distance a dog might pick me up.I always set up for close encounters. As the dogs are coming in I let them come soon as they notice something, usually they stop and look for a brief moment..that's when I erase their memory.the kiss sound travels a long way.you don't have to kiss your hand like some do....are you skylining yourself??this time of year they don't have to eat as much as when its cold..

 :yeah:

If they are coming into a call and suddenly turn around and run, then you were busted.  Either your vehicle was in sight, they smelled you, or they saw movement.

Shoot them at 200 to 225 yrds and your problem should go away :chuckle:.  Once a coyote starts coming in quit calling, they know where the call is coming from. Sometimes they will hold up but usually start coming in again. If not then do some low volume squeaks or whatever. We usually shoot at 250 yrds or less, at which point whenever the opportunity arises. The only time we call them in closer is just to screw with and to piss the shooter off, since there is more chance of a screwup at the closer ranges.
