I had mine about 3-4 feet but got tired of the elk playing with them an pushing them around. I had an elk nock my camera down and every few days would come back and push it around. I found it 12' from the tree.

I now put them up in the tree about 6-7 feet and get several shots looking down their noses as they reach up and try and sniff them.

About two feet for me, and depending on the location of the cam I sometimes wedge a stick under the top or the bottom of the camera to change the angle.

2-4 feet but I use Master Python locks and secure them tight to the tree and brush them in with moss, etc.  Bears are my only threat but most just slime them up good before wandering off.  I keep them as scent free as possible to avoid taste testing by bears.
