just curious if any of you have had any success calling in the early season and if you have what type of calling seems to work. thanks
-
what early seaon are you referring to?? :dunno:
-
sorry i was referring to the archery season in sept
-
a fawn bleat will bring in the does but as far as bucks go, i havent had any bucks come earlier than middle of oct.the bucks are still in bach.groups so they know where eachother are at all times.
-
how far do they tend to spread out in bach groups? are they like right together or just in hearing distance? or?
-
If you come across a bachelor group of Blacktail and see one buck, you can probably see the others close by. The youngest ones will hang together the longest into fall. The bigger older one's will segregate early.

Oh ok, that makes sense for the pre rut

I have done a ton of calling for blacktails. By far the hardest time to call them in is September. But if that is when you will be hunting, I would gently rattle some horns together. You will be surprised at the amount of deer will come in to see what is making the noise. They won't charge in like they will in October and November but they will still come in. I would stay away from bleats and grunts this time of year. I have tried many times with little luck.
If you are hunting over bait, I think rattling is the best way to get bucks to come in before dark.

Are the big guys mostly going nocturnal at this point? I saw alot fewer bucks around mid sept of last year

I think the bigger bucks start to go nocturnal once they rub there horns.

went to a calling seminar for blacktail once, he said rattling in sept has been the best for him :dunno:. kinda wierd, ive never tried that early cause i dont archery deer but its worth a shot

might as well utilize all the relavent techniques you can use in the field for a sucessful hunt

Depend on what area you are hunting. Some areas in King County, you bring a bag of Wonder Bread and you whisle and they come running. They will jump in your back seat for rose bushes. :chuckle:
