Title: Weyerhaeuser Closures
Post by: Martinhunter on August 16, 2009, 08:01:02 PM
So what do you all think the odds are that warehouser will open thier gates by the 8th. Is there rain in the forcast?

Not a chance.  The last long range forecast that I saw had 0 rain in it for the next couple of weeks.  Once they close off the land they like to keep it shut down until the rifle guys are ready.  :bash:

Not true PB. I'd be willing to bet the majority of it will be open for at least the second half of early archery. This same thing happens every year and every year it's open.

Not until we have a good gully washer of a rainstorm. Did see a nice 3x3 and a couple of spikes tonight on state land here in the willapa hills.

I was being facetious.  I doubt that they will have the gates open by the opener of deer or elk, they rarely do, but certain areas will open if we get a ton of rain but only if.  There have been years where they have kept us out until the last week.  Outdoor burn bans usually hold on until the day before rifle season.  Either way, I prefer late season, not as many hunters and better weather, no worrying about closures except for maybe snow.

Yeah, not as many hunters in the late season, cause it sucks compared to the early season.  :bash: Sorry to offend anyone, if you're offended, you're as bad as those IFish clowns.  >:( They will more than likely keep it closed til the first 2-5 days, then you can go in an slaughter them. That is what has happened in the past, that is if you are ok with walking in, but you don't need the gates open for that as long as it is open to walk in traffic. Just my  :twocents: As long as you're not a puss.

The problem with Weyerhauser and their gates is this:  Just because the recording says they are closed, does not mean they are.  That is why me and my group have hunted elk for the last time on Weyco land.  You hike in 4-5 miles behind a gate, leaving the truck 3 hours before daylight and  then all of a sudden, there are trucks running the roads everywhere.  You flag one down and they say oh, Weyco opened the gates.  :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:  OR, the main gate into an area will be locked, but someone "forgot" to lock the back gate.  Heck I caught a ride with one guy, had a 5x5 bull in the back, WHOLE.  He followed the bough cutters in and shot the bull 200 yards from where they had been working.  Oh, and this was on a Wednesday.  All the gates were locked except where they were hauling logs out of.

Weyerhauser sucks ass when it comes to their gate policies, and they are not going to change, when 500 people have keys, and use them on their days off to access land by vehicle that no one else can get to.   Do not tell me it is against company policy and they can get fired, yadda yadda yadda, blah, blah, blah.  I have called them 5 or 6 times in one season, reporting stuff, they do not care.

I'm with PB, I seriously doubt they open the gates. The forcast calls for more dry, warm days for the next week+. :twocents:

Things may change with the Weyco lands soon,  as I stated in another post, a LARGE chunck of Weyco property in Pacific County is now sold to, and managed by, a company out of Port Angeles called Green Crow.  Still waiting to see what they do with access down here.  Curious to see if they are purchasing land tracts in some other areas.

Just go to the office and say your name is jose or that you just snuck in from mexico they will give you a key every brushcutter or fernpicker has one. And they don;t stop for fire danger because they can;t read.

What's with all the the complaining? Hunting any timber company's land is a privilege not a right. I for one am thankful I can hunt their land when its open.

....back to the original question. I think the gates will be closed for the early part of the season unless we get a decent amount of rain between now and the opener. It seems like it always rains at some point in the season so my guess is that's when the gates will open.

Weyerhaeuser has sold a bunch of it's land to Hancock as well.  Hancock now owns the Vail tree farm.

That's what I read in Wa/Or Game and Fish and my friend who hauls logs out of Vail said Hancock owns all or part of it.  If you know something different let me know.  It is sometimes hard to get the truth, even from those on the inside.

Sometimes in the morning the gate will be open, but if you drive in it may be closed and LOCKED when you want to get out.  Last year if you downed an elk you could call and let them know when you would be at what gate and how long you would be in and they were good about letting bow hunters in to get their elk.

I talked with a buddys uncle, who just retired from the vail tree farm and he asked some of his buddys that still work on the farm and they know nothing about any sell out.

If they sold out, none of the workers know about it  :dunno:

If there was a real estate transaction wouldn't it be a matter of public record? That's Thurston County. Maybe if somebody wants to know bad enough they could check with the county.

The only large land sales I've read is that they sold 120,000 acres in NW Oregon to the Campbell Group.  Also, the are selling or have sold another 82,000 acres by Raymond.  This must be what willapawapiti is talking about.

Willapawapiti is talking about the 14,000 ac. Skidmore Block out of South Bend. The 82,000 ac. for sale is in the Nemah and west of 101 between Raymond and Aberdeen. They did not sell the Vail Block. Only thing that is sold is the Skidmore and North Coast.

Okay, I stand corrected.  I guess that you can't believe all that you read and what you hear from friends.  It is stated on page 49 of the August issue of Washington/ Oregon Game and fish magazine that Hancock owns Vail.  I guess they got their facts wrong yet again!
