Title: chlorophyll caplets?
Post by: EastWaViking on August 21, 2009, 06:56:40 AM
Just wondering if anybody else on here uses chlorophyll caplets as part of your sent control?  I start taking them her in another couple days and will keep taking them daily until the end of September.
I noticed a definite advantage, especially when hunting from the ground, while taking them.  They are an internal deodorant.  I eat quite a bit of garlic, and I noticed that the deer were smelling me out at 70 yards or so even after I showered and wore unscented clothing etc.  I started taking the chlorophyll caplets and even downwind the deer couldn't smell me at 20 yards!

I read something about that a couple of years ago - wasn't sure if it was just a gimmick, though.

I also read something about NOT eating garlic during hunting season.  It supposedly smells like some pheremone that a deer gives off when alarmed (sounds sorta like crap to me) but I do know that it has a strong scent.  I also love garlic but don't eat it during or just before hunting season starts.

As far as scent protection goes, I'm often out there a lot for several days at a time, so it's tough to stay scent free.  I make some effort in that I wash my clothes with scent free detergent, use scent free deoderant and soap, but otherwise mainly just try to stay downwind.  My scent free efforts are probably half-hearted - I don't put my clothes in special scent free bags, get dressed when I get there, change to fresh clothes in the afternoon, etc.

It might matter more if I was sitting in a treestand...

you can get away with a lot more if you are in a tree stand.  I sit on the ground most of the time during the early deer season and the wind always seems to shift directions just after the sun goes down.  I take the scent control real serious, but when it's 80 degrees or hotter, all the sent free stuff is pretty much ruined as soon as you start to sweat.  The caplets really do help in that situation.  Late buck, I still hunt from the ground, but don't worry about the caplets as much because it's much colder out, and you don't sweat.  I'd suggest every early Elk/deer archer give it a try, I think you'll be surprised how well they work.   :twocents:

I'll give it a try - I've seen them at GNC before so I'll pick some up next time I'm in there.

I just looked up "side effects" and one site said it might turn your piss green but I can live with that.  :o

A couple of other sites that I looked at said that there are no known side effects (I always check this stuff out before I start eating anything that could be called a "supplement".)

had a friend in Alaska, John Sheets (RIP)  used to always hunt with Fred Bear. Lived by those things, he would start taking them about a month out from hunting season and he would tell you that you are good when you are pissing green and pooping green.  He was a diehard bowhunter.

I never tried them I smoke so I have to use the wind to the best of my abilities...

Well they've been used for years by dog breeders to cover up their bitches scent when they're in heat.....some say it works and others say it doesn't.

I'd say its worth a try but don't expect miraculous results...and yes the green pigments in chlorophyll cause color changes just like the red pigment in beets  ;)

good luck...

Beets will make you faint the first time you go to the bathroom after eating them.  Saw the "beet effect" and almost passed out - was pretty sure that I was going to die right there on the *censored*ter.  I can't imagine what would happen if you had green piss at the same time.  The guys with the black helicopters would come and take you to Area 51, probably.

Viking, I'll check out the link that you provided - thanks!

parsley is a good one but you have got to eat a lot. it is also a natural breath freshener which is how it's tradition as a garnish got started....more useless info from the princess

i once ate one of those food coloring tablets used for coloring easter eggs and I pooped green.  I was 5.  Although I don't know if it cut down my scent. :dunno:

We usually try to cut down on all spicy foods for a week before the season.
