Post by: coachcw on August 21, 2009, 02:37:12 PM: A quick field judging tip I use is , look at the eye gaurds if there as long as his face good , then if his fours are noticibly longer than his g1's with decent g3's kill him . that is in less you have some killer tag that method typically would put a bull over 300 inless he's really missing something else.Some times when you are calling in a bull there;s not much time to judge him practice that and you'll get pretty good at making a quick judgement call, Good luck Coach.

I have a watershed elk tag. So I guess he walks for the first 5 days.

Too much emphasis on score these days, a healthy wild animal taken on public land hunted ethically is a true trophy in my book. I really don't think anybody in their right mind would pass on anything 5x5 or better, but then I prefer modern and we all love spike only regs leaving the big ones for tribal use. Good luck getting him out!

Good 3rds for the blues and his fourth and fifth look good so I would say 340+ but the velvet could make him look bigger than he is. Those are the hard ones to pass but thats up to you! nwhunter

For a 350+ bull hes gonna need better thirds. Normally a bull with substantial thirds is a monster. because if the thirds are big everything else is big too.

I was thinking 335, and extra 5 inches on both thirds would get him real close to 350 in my opinion. :twocents:

Holding out for a 350 bull in WA is a tall order unless you have a special permit. Good luck on this bull. He won't go 350"; likely in the 320's.

I have heard it before but in a special draw area with big bull potential, say 350 plus potential, shooting a 310 bull the first day would be a tough one to live with but after you give it your all for ten days then that same bull would be a well earned reward if you gave it your all. Just my opinion knock on wood. nwhunter

Well lets see......since you know nothing about me...I guided professionaly in Montana for 4 years I have 3 6x6 bulls on my wall....and several rag horns and I guided many successful hunters...so yeah your right, I know NOTHING about bulls...there is no way those G3's are 13 inches....more like 9-10....DOnt get me wrong he is a nice bull and I would take him in a second, but he is not gonna go 340. Sorry

When I guided I had to be VERY good at judging bulls.....I give this guy a lower score, cause he is still in velvet and that adds to how big he looks....Just cause I am new here does not mean I am new to elk hunting bud...far from it

All I said is that I don't think this Bull will go ver 305...315 at the most...

Just guessing but I'd put him around 283" or so... How close am i?

Also I would bet a dollar to a dime that the bull that started this thread is over 320"... and would bet a nickel he's 330" plus...

The pic of this bull sucks....I shot this as a movie...and had to take a pic of a still frame...he is biggger racked than he looks, to be fair...he is actually a 6x7 with the 7th point on the right beam....but as a referrance his g4s are 15 3/16th inches long

Michael J is pretty close with his guess. Maybe 290. but that is one pic and you cant even see all of his points. Hard to judge one blury photo without at least on more angle.

Atmost I'm guessing that bull goes 300", but he's severly lacking 3rds and mass... I'll stick with mid 280's... ;) But who knows I've never even officially scored a buck/bull I just go by what I see with my 'field judging' skills!
