Title: Weather prediction at Columbia River??? Need assitance of sorts...
Post by: cohoho on August 21, 2009, 05:25:22 PM
SAT
NW WIND 10 KT...BECOMING N 15 TO 20 KT IN THE AFTERNOON.
STRONGEST WIND S OF NEWPORT. WIND WAVES 1 FT...BUILDING TO 3 FT.
NW SWELL 6 FT N TO 8 FT S...WITH PERIOD OF 11 SECONDS.

Talking my bud that fishes there alot, he has decided to not go tomorrow either, well go figure the only day I get to hang out with Allen (Robodad) the weather probably going to do us in.  For those that fish it regularly, up near the bridge, it will probably be nasty as I have been there when it was 15kts wind and 3 foot wind waves, add them together and your talking 9 foot waves......    Don't mind too awful much driving through to get to point A or B but don't think I'd like to be trolling in my boat in those waves...  How bout the protection level down between Warrenton and Hammon on the Oregon side?  Anyone hit that during this weather and what would it be like, protected or not?  Please let me know as I'm making a final call here in a few...  I'm tempted because I want to, but hate to travel all the way there and fight that plus the crowds for a couple silvers?

Today was a herring show for us. We had 3 rods out started out with 2 spinners 1 herring. Herring got the first fish, then we switched one more to herring, next fish on new herring rod. switched other rod to herring off the water by 1230. No nooks and no nates. All hatchery fish. Not to bad of a fishery today. Started at the bridge trolling down hill on the outgoing, hit fish around baker bay enterance. trolled out to bouy 12 and turned around for the incomming, hit 2 trolling up river with the incomming then turned into the the tide and finished it off. All fish 8-12 pounds...

Fished today with my dad. It was the first time we had been down there in 7 years. We hooked 6 fish, landed 3, but only 1 that could come home. Also had a few other short strikes.

Heard that two boats collided and one went down on the OR side today, and that was the reason for the Coast Guard Chopper out there today. Not sure if they found the person they were looking for or not.
Edit: This isn't what happened, but a boat did go down. Guy got back safe. I found the actual story on another board

While fishing the bridge hog line at incoming tide, watched one boat hit the bridge trolling against all the boats lined up, and watched another boat hit their rod on one of the pillars as they trolled through against all the boats.

OK Well I proved once again that I have the *censored*tiest luck in the world for fishin and I don't just mean for me, cause it goes for everyone in the boat as well !! Nocoho, Curtis, and I spent from around 10:00 till 4:30 untangleing lines in the Columbia yesterday and only caught (snagged) one itty bitty coho that was too small to even know it was on the line LOL !!

Nocoho has been very graciously taking me fishin every now and then confident that he can prove that it's not me that has such bad Juju but I think he is finally realizing that maybe it is all me so I'm a bit worried that these occasional endevors are going to be quickly coming to an end  :'(  I hope I can convince him to give me another chance !!!  :chuckle:

Thats why they call it fishin and not catchin !!!

Any time Allen, man --my bud convinced me to run the Oregon side, even after talking with Antlershed on the phone on the way over the bridge and he had two or three fish...  Anyhow parking was a nightmare (Warrenton Launch), got to the launch at 1000am, went out to fish upcoming tide, which has been lights out for the past 3-7 days at high tide....  Get out and get started see one fish caught up near the green can, and see another net flying 50 boats away.... by the saw dust pile....  Thought right on- it's going to get good, then nothing for the next four hours from anyone.  It was like the Spanish Armada had arrived, boats everywhere....  Way to many people fishing....  Heard good reports on the radio (channel 68) so don't know if it was buoy 10 or Washington side and via phone from guys on Washington side. :bash:  Look around for my buddy, heck he is on the Washington side too and has a couple.  We skunked out....  Unless you count the 15" little silver I got....  Weather was kind of rough and the current flow was unbelievable for sure, alot of little boats that probably shouldn't have been out there.  Right after high tide rolled in it started getting rougher, and we called it a day.  While driving over the bridge heading to Chinook, of course we look down on the Washington side and nets flying everywhere.... :bash: :bash:  Go figure wrong side, wrong time, wrong day...  Oh well when you can run down from Seattle once in awhile you take your chances...  Good times never the less with Allen and a friend of mine..... Allen, you bad mojo is just a fading past... It can't last.... Or atleast I hope it doesn't...  You might be banned from Astoria area if the word gets out you were fishing yesterday... on the Oregon side... :chuckle: :chuckle:

I think - I officially quit Salmon fishing yesterday while in Washington...  Whew.......... in the meantime I'll stick to Sturgeon and figure Steelhead out.. And leave Salmon to trips back up north................... Hate tarnishing good memories :chuckle:

You are right about the current ripping on incoming tide. I fished the zoo at the bridge, and the T8 was working hard just to hold in the current. While holding our position in the current, the spinny wheel speedometer on the fishfinder was reading 4mph.

Only one that could come home. Hooked six landed 3 (1 hatchery silver, 1 undersized king, and 1 wild silver), and had a few other short strikes.
