so we have been trying to figure out the whole tuna fishing out of westport thing has anyone done it if so any help would be appreciated we are going to make the trip this Saturday

Never been out of Westport myself,fish out of the CR when the ocean isn't too angry.Not sure if you have a bait tank or even if live bait is available in Westport but if so spring for a scoop or two it's well worth it.

Are you going on a charter, or taking your own boat? Myself and 11 other guys from work are heading out on Friday night. Its kinda become a yearly trip. From the reports the fish are only 30 miles right now.

Boat next to ours just came in after 3 days had over 300 fish and a 20 pound average really nice fish. Lot of boats heading out tomorrow hope you have a good trip.

One of my hunting buddies went out of Westport last week on a 2-day... 10 people took 75 fish.

we are taking our boat i think the plan right now is just jump behind a carter boat and go i dont think we are planning to stay the night out there that could get a little hairy in a 27 foot boat. we do do have a live tank and there is a place in westport that you can pick up live bait.

I don't know how it is in Washington, but I did a lot of offshore fishing in SoCal... I know that the open ocean is fair game but, a lot of charter skippers weren't too keen on other boats following them... something to do with keeping their "honey holes" to themselves. It might be wise to ask the skipper, via radio, first. :twocents:

i wasnt talking to there fishing hole just to break the waves and get us out to the blue water from what i get out of it once you hit the blue water and find a temp around 64 deg. its just a matter of trolling and spotting for jumping fish.

We got a report today fish at 35 miles lots of boats went out today. Several charters headed out today.

Ya most of it is just finding the temp brake in the water. There isnt much of a honey hole. The water is around 2000 - 2500 ft deep. I guess you could call that a hole. Make sure that if you find some debrie ( floating grass, logs, ect ) throw some bait down. You can find the odd yellowtail around. Those things are tasty.

Just got back from my own tuna trip out of Westport. We found the fish out about 35-45 miles, but they were south, out from Ilwaco area. The fish were holding around 61 degree water. We trolled around looking for packs of birds on the water, listening to radio talk from the charters, and once we got a hit would look for jumpers. If they were rolling we would immediately throw out the live bait on lighter gear.....we did fairly well. 35 ft boat with just 4 people, landed about 40 all good size, and we burned a couple of good hours up north before we got wind that they were south. BUT, tuna move so much, you never know....just find water above 60 and look for packs of divers (birds) on the water.
For a charter I recommend Miss Magoo out of Westport, no other captain fills his boat like he does. :twocents:
