Took the day off so I could beat the crowds (dream) for a day on the Puyallup. Got down there about 9:00 off River Road. Caught six pinks before noon, threw them all back (I don't really eat fish). After that, I drove out towards Puyallup, and the river was FILLED with people. Side by side for miles.
-
i've heard of people pulling guns out there from many different story tellers. "combat" fishing gets nasty.
but I'd still like to make a trip out. corky and yarn??
-
I've heard the same thing. I stayed on River Road, more towards Tacoma. There weren't a whole lot of people down that way, most were towards Puyallup. I've never encountered any of that. If I did, I'd leave. I'm not getting killed over a Humpy. Anyway, my idea of going on a Wednesday to beat the crowds didn't seem to work.
-
Not sure how truthful those stories are, I spent a good deal of time there this weekend and I can say everyone I saw and talked to was very friendly and I didn't see one arguement at all. The only thing that I didn't much care for was all the snagging, it was pretty out of hand.
-
Im thinking of heading up there soon even though ive heard all the stories but i still want to to try and catch my first river salmon... where would you recommend to try ?
-
Pulling guns over humpies. :dunno: What are things coming too. Id rather stick to knife fights for chums. :chuckle:

man, you live by the chehalis, wait a month or so and you'll have them right in your back yard.

You summabitch!! Get outta my damn hole! Im gunna shoot ya if ya don't!! These pinks are so damn delicious they are totally worth your life! After I shoot ya Im gunna throw your ass in the river too so I suggest you take your snoopy pole and your smelly barkin black lab back up to your pickumup truck before things get ugly!! Now leave me alone so I can fill up my freezer with all these delicious pinkys that will most likely get all freezer burned sitting in my freezer for four years until the next run of em comes in. AND I better not see ya hear again four years from now! :P

Went to the Puy tonight after work. Hooked a ton of fish and kept three hens for eggs. Fishing was really good until the idiots started standing halfway across the river, which is where the fish were laying.

If I were a little more brash I'd whistle loudly while in the Puyallup "meat line" and say "Ok, listen guys, the fish are laying 1/3 to 1/2 ways across the river, we're all going to take 10 steps backward and stop casting to the other side of the damn river...ready, GO!"
But I'm not that brash so I just have to cast way past the majority of the fish like everyone else so we don't get too many tangles.
I particularly like the ones who stand another 5 steps beyond the crowd (who are already too far out) with his spinning reel on the top of his rod, reeling backwards. After a while my head starts aching from rolling my eyes so much.

Oh, now that's funny... :chuckle:
That's right up there with putting a side mount high power variable scope on a short barreled lever rifle.

Nope...instead I just start casting over peoples' shoulders hoping they get the point. The caliber of people up there don't get it though.

I haven't seen much in the way of arguements either but I fish an area with not much crowds, the snagging pisses me off with so many fish why do you need to, I've been lucky and probably hooked 50+ fish down there so far and maybe 5 were fouled. You're going to limit out with that many fish I've only come out once with out a limit, I got 9 days on a back country elk hunt next week so I got the smoker running 24-7 gonna go down tomorrow and bang out a few more, this is the first time I've ever exprienced " Fishermen's Elbow" :chuckle: My left wrist is killing me from so many fish :IBCOOL:

The fish are so thick though they're laying everywhere :twocents:

Once those guys stepped out there, it was game over for us. I won't be back up there. Too many edible fish to be caught elsewhere... :twocents:

I am surprised you even went up there to battle..... :bdid:

I haven't fished the Puyallup for several years, but I recall it being a flossing show - throw a long leader, get the leader into the mouth of the fish, then pull the hook into the side of the head. That still the deal? Or are they truly taking it in the mouth?
-
How much longer does this Pink Fishery last?
-
it'll be going on for at least another 2 or 3 weeks.
they definitely aren't biting much in that river, you're flossing them even with short leaders. they're just stacked in there so thick that it's unavoidable. if you look carefully at that cement water you can see the ripples just out of the current.
i made my 1 trip there yesterday just because i haven't been fishing much. i could see probably 500 people in either direction(i was "fishing" below the mouth of the stuck). garbage everywhere and the place stunk like a sewer. like brent, i gave it up pretty quick, after some hillbilly dumb*censored*s walked in directly below me and waded 15 feet out(which was about 10 feet past where i was hooking my fish).
she's more fun to fish in november when the water clears up, but i'm moving soon, so i probably won't be there for that...

BINGO, of course if you check the reports on some other web sites they all say what a tremendous fisherman they are, hooking a dozen fish and of course most legally. I've fished it enough this year to know better. I saw only 2-3 fish caught legally out of dozens......

I am not advocating flossing, lining, shredding, flipping or anything else, but it is a style of catching pinks and reds within rivers. But if they aren't catching them in the mouth then it is illegal to keep. Which your right about about that only a few are catching legally... I watched the other day, what a zoo and 90% weren't even beginning to be in sync with others on the line. Some casting up river, some down river, some two foot, some across the river, some flipping, some I don't know what the heck they were doing???? The best were the ones hooking up river and trying to fight the fish like they got a prize steelhead on with light weight line. Yelling down the line- "FISH ON" and cutting in front of everyone..... It is nothing more than a meat run (Blah), if your going --- heavy lines and once hook up occurs, bring them straight in..... Too bad, so many idiots, it would be a great place to take some kids that never fished and get them into fishing. Be kind of nice for the State to set aside an area like that in the future..... Oh the best part was ----- the crack heads under the bridge........ and the drunks in parking lots, mixed in with the Redneck White trash...... Nice trash piles everywhere too..... Have fun, wear your safety glasses..... What a beautiful fishing place it is... :yike:
-
I love it when all the idiots are casting all the way across the river and the fish are laying 5 feet in front of you and behind you. There is a reason they keep running into your legs in the river. No need to cast that far.
-
I saw three guys, no BS, I actually fished in behind them, because the waded I would say 100 feet out to the far shoreline, total idiots. people were hooking fish in back of them.... Fish were rolling all over behind them. I think the thing about the whole deal that bothered me is the younger kids fishing, with pops, their uncle, etc.. who were being shown the wrong way to to thing's like it's OK. The kids next to me were yarding them in snagged up, and dad is oblivious, they kept a limit of illegal fish and dad could have cared less if the were brought in backwards and upside down :(.
-
Having never really seen the river and checked it out is it boatable? sounds like everyone is on the bank... might sound like a real stupid question to some but i really have no idea? :dunno: dont want to be in that whole mess of people but have a drift boat and sled so :dunno:
-
You could try it, but I think you'd be really unhappy with the results, you'd have guys casting and wading all around you.
-
its that bad huh?
-

Oh ya! You'd be pummeled by weights and insults :bdid:

wow guess if i still do end up going ill stick to the bank for safety reasons :yike:

It is a flossing show for the most part, with the low clarity for one and like you said the long leader game....I personally run 3 foot leader and while I've had some foul hooks most that I have hooked have at least been in the head. With the short leader I've been able to get a lot of the soft bite fish. Which for me is more satisfying to know what I'm throwing the fish are actually sucking it up.
-
snagging ain't fishing. Flossing, now that's a new one on me :bash:

Me too!
-
Flossing is using a long leader and getting the leader to drag through the mouth of the fish, and then lifting slowly on the rod to slide the hook into the corner of the mouth. Normally done when you have a lot of fish stacked in one hole. Used to do it when I was younger...now I stick to using bait.
-
Flossing is just skilled snagging. that's is!! Just a new name for an old dirty game. :chuckle:

Pretty much. I didn't know any better at the time I was doing it, but you won't catch me ever going back to doing it. :twocents:

They can put up a hell of a fight though, lots of fun even if you let them all go. We hit the puyallup last night and I caught 10, brought home my limit of 4 and my buddy caught 4 or 5 and brought home 2 as well. I'll be back. Even combat fishing can be fun, its still fishing in some way or form!
But now when the Coho come in......... that i'm really excited about too.
-
Son and I fished it for three hours and caught 13. Had a blast!!! Everyone was nice

yeah everyone was real nice where we were too. the fish are so thick nobody gets ticked off about missing one due to a tangle or something because they know there will be another one on the next cast!
-
I banged out about 15 or so plus one nice silver....about 10lbs so they're starting to show. Had another silver about 5lb but he flipped out of my hand while I was tryint to get him on the stringer.

aw hell, i may go tonight if i can swing it!
-
Lots of fun out there this afternoon. Everyone was real nice and catching fish left and right, i heard one guy say he was up to 30 this afternoon, just catch and release. Couple of silver's caught. If only people on Levee road would come join the rest of us the night would have been great. They snagged one guy's line 5 times plus stole a fish from him on one. Not fun, was ready to get the knife out and start cutting his gear, but we remained calm.
-
I don't mind one accidental hook up. not a big deal. but after 2 or 3, something has got to change. if one guy tangled with me 5 times, I might be inclined to cut his line.
-
Went up there yesterday and had a good time and wasnt nearly as bad as people led me to believe... the water in that river is kinda nasty looking but there really wasnt that many people and nobody even close enough to cause any problems. All in all a real good day other than falling in and flooding my waders in the first half hour! >:( ha ha real funny i know

LOL :) I was worried about that happening to me, the current wanted to take me down but I resisted. i'm only 5'10" so I felt about a 1ft too short to be out there.

Ya i freakin tripped over a snag and went down right on my face! My phone got soaked but by the time we left it cleared up so its all good :)

I've been worried about that! Just got a new Pre, so I opted to leave it in the car. although in that area, i'm more than a little concerned about break in potential. Seems like whenever a group gets together to do something like hunt or fish, there is always a string of car break-ins.
