Went scouting for my ID unit 11 bull tag last night/this morning!
Rolled into camp last night just before dark and headed out to an area that I've researched.... spotted 30 + cows/calfs and heard 2 different bulls buggling! Really excited to the following morning.
Was up and hiking at daylight and hiked farther into the area... Ran into a cow at 80 yards and circled downwind when I hear a bugle about 250 yards away... I move some and bugle back at him... he answers about 15 seconds later. I moved a total of about 100 yards to him bugling every few minutes and circling downwind... Once into the timber I hear cow calling about 80 yards from me. I get into position and rip out another bugle when all the sudden brush starts crashing and a cow breaks out of the trees about 40 yards away and literally comes running at me! I see horns coming through the trees on her ass and it's a very nice 5x5 bull! :IBCOOL:
I stay still and the cow stops at 12 yards for a few seconds then starts to circle downwind while the bull comes at me and stops about 15 yards away... Keep in mind I'm not in the greatest position, I was out in the middle of a 20 yard diameter grass clearing and am just on my knees. They hadn't a clue I was there; Kings camo rocks!
The cow finally got far enough downwind of me to smell me and they trotted off but weren't too alarmed...
I give HUGE props to ElkNut productions for their bugling all bulls volume 1 video which I ordered a few months back and without that video I really wouldn't of had a clue on what calls to use, what the bull was saying with his bugle and I'm sure I never would've gotten the bull that close. I could've easily killed him with my bow!
The rest of the day I spotted 2 raghorns, about 10 cow/calfs and 2 spikes and also heard 2 different bulls bugle....
by far one of the best scouting trips I've had and I'm am STOKED for October 25th! :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Ya I bought the set and watched them all twice now. I have learned alot. I had made the error that most do in responding to locator bugles incorrectly. Most important I think was the many different cow calls and how to use them. Lastly, Elknut must have been a car salesman at some point in his career cause he sure is convincing :chuckle:

Thats some good looking country! 8) Good luck on your hunt.Where do i order elknut productions bugling all bulls 1?
-
That was my problem Crunchy! lol Especially with it being pre-rut and all!
BHforever, they're are a site sponsor. here's a link! If I was hunting during the rut I'd spring for the whole set, but being a poor college kid I'm gonna have to wait till next year... lol

MichaelJ,
I've got a cow tag for 11-1, I will start scouting after early WA elk ends (Sept 20) and my hunt starts 10/17, I will let you know if I see any decent bulls.
-
Just watched Volume 1 twice, will watch all the others over the next week. Gotta do something to kill the time waiting for season to open next week. Can only shoot so much in a day :)

Michael, I can't remeber if I replied to your PM on this hunt or not ? I have only been in that unit once about 15 years ago. It looks like you are headed in the right direction.
I have ELKNUTS whole set and if you PM me your address I would be glad to send them to you, if you will send them back when you are done.

Ironhead,
No worries, I think you did reply! I have got some great info from a resident in Lewiston who has been super helpful... We're actually planning another scouting trip for next week!
I really appreciate the offer for the DVD set! I have to think about that, because right now I have a whole year until I'm actually out hunting during the rut. My tag starts 10-25 so it'll be good and over by then...
yousowise, Sweet good deal! You have the 11-1 tag not the 11-1A tag correct? So its the same unit as mine? Let me kjnow what you see scouting!

Its one of the top bull tags to draw in ID....
Its really a shame they don't give out any archery rut tags, that would be SWEET!!!
