I am thinking I need a rifle that shoots fatter bullets, for no good reason.
My choices are:
35 Whelen
.375 H&H
I cant figure out how to make it a poll
Dumb ass

I'd go 375 Ruger.
-
I like my .35 Whelen
-
there you have a poll...any other calibers you'd like to add?
-
H&H
-
45-70, 45-110
-
WOW Jackalope "You da man".
naw, I know there are lots of cartridges but these are the two I am looking at. I could not go for one that is less than 20 years old!! LOL
:chuckle:

45-70 8)

45-70 :twocents:

375 H&H leave that slow old 45/70 on the shelf
-
35 Whelen Ackley Improved
-
338 or 375 ultra mag, but the 35 whelen i great classic cartridge.
-
325 WSM
-
.325 WSM here too. In fact, just bought one. :chuckle:
-
Something in 338. Unless you're going to Africa the 338 is far more versatile than the guns you mentioned (also far superior ballistically speaking). They can be loaded for long range shooting or for busting brush. There's a bigger selection of bullets for them and the ammo and brass is more readily available.
While I have no experience with it the 338 Ruger is interesting. Probably go it or the old reliable win mag. If you really wanted to getting into canyon pounding stuff long range the RUM would be viable too.
-
Carl, in response to your question... I think the .375 H&H is a fine calibre, probably my first choice. On the other hand, the Whelen is a fine calibre and not everybody has one of those. You can't go wrong with either one.
Since I can read, I am not going to recommend something you didn't ask about.. :chuckle:
-
375 H&H. All the choices mentioned are good. You said you want something with fatter bullet. .375 bullets are fatter than .325, .338, and .358.
-
I would choose the 375 H&H as well.
-
I shoot an A-Bolt II in 325wsm and its a pretty cool round . but i wish i still had my #1 in 45-70.
-
The 35 Whelan does nothing for me.
What's missing, is what you have now?
OK, assuming you've got a varmint rifle, and intermediate Deer sized game rifle, Everyone has a lever action in 30-30, and you should own a 30-06, (OK, you could have a 7mag), And if you've got those and are wondering about bigger bores, then I assume you've got a .30 or .338 magnum...
.375 is the next step. But there's nothing that the .30 or .338 mag won't take at distance in the lower 48, and for the most part Alaska/Yukon.
If you're a Bear or Elk hunter. Have ya looked at the Marlin XLR in .444 Marlin? A lever gun with some pop.

375 H&H leave that slow old 45/70 on the shelf
:yeah:
.325 WSM and .338 are grat but I think he's looking for something in a .35 Caliber or larger correct??? Can't beat the 375 H&H.
-
Shoot before you buy.. Recoil of the .375H&H is not for the meek.
Yes, leave the 45-70 on the shelf.
There is the .450 Marlin.. I like the balistics of the .444 Marlin better though.
Then again,, If you really want a big bore, the smallest of the Nitro Express's should get your heart pounding.

45-70 )
Got my guide model that stays in the fishing boat or with me if archery hunting up North.
-
:)Thanks for your responses, I am leaning to the 375, I have shot some and they are not bad on recoil more of a push, like a shotgun.
and I have lots of rifles, 223's thru 300 win mag. I have no use for any RUM, WSM or anything else less than 20 years old. I kinda like the 35 for its history and Townsend Whelen etc, I like the 375 for the same reasons. I see the 375 as a bit more versatile. I have no use for the 7mm Mag or 338 win mag, my 300's do anything they do, Better. I have no NEED for this rifle, I just want a big fat bullet rifle!! Maybe a 458?
Keep your ideas coming.
thanks
Carl

I like the 375 H&H. You could also look at the 9.3 x 62. (since you want an "old" cartridge)
-
Neet thing about the H&H.. The tragectory of the range of bullets available is near identical as the 30-06.
-Steve
-
Why not a .358 on a short action? If you are stuck on a .35 caliber or bigger. Give you something completely different. Or how about a .338 Federal?
-
Well, now that's not a bad idea..
.358 Norma Mag. -If not the .444 marlin, then the .358 is my next round. Certainly not the .338Fed. (just my :twocents: )
-
Heck, was not even thinking about the Norma Mag. I was thinking the .358 Winchester. However, the Norma would be an awesome elk/bear gun. Brass is a bit expensive, though.
-
I'd get an H&H because It shoots Fairly flat, but it probably is gonna kick more.
Plus there are more choices of ammo in the H&H than in the Whelen.
-
I have a 35 REM not whelan for my pistol and that thing is a blast to shoot, and it dang sure knocks the crap out of a deer at 150 yards
-
not sure what your going to do with it but I think a custom remington model 7 in .358 winchester would be an excellent west side general purpose rifle :twocents:
-
GO NAVTIVE USE A BOW AND YOU WONT NEED TO WORRY ABOUGHT IT :hello:
-
I have a 350 Rem Mag which is very similar to the 35 Whelen so I voted for it but a 375 is in my future.
-
375 H&H leave that slow old 45/70 on the shelf
slow?
try jumping out of it's path just once.
i have never had an elk jump out of the way of mine.
D.R.T.= dead right there
-
voted .35 Whelen........ I always wanted one of those rifles! Its a great all around big game caliber. Great ballistics and such plus its a dying breed. I guess Im old school
-
Well my preference is 9.3X62 and it has been around since 1905, my other is 45-70.
-
375 H&H leave that slow old 45/70 on the shelf
Hey I resemble that remark!! I like my 45/70...cuz I am slow and old..well older than before :chuckle:
-
35 Whelen Ackley Improved.
Or get an OLD school 9.3x57 Mauser
-
KillBilly asked me to read the question it was not what we want but what your choice between the 35W and the 375HH. I would go for the 375HH because the ammo is easyer to find if you are in a jamb and need some factory stuff in the bush. :twocents:
-
KillBilly asked me to read the question it was not what we want but what your choice between the 35W and the 375HH.
When you read the poll, the third option is: Other...please post your choice
And again, I vote 375 Ruger #1 and #2 choice would be 9.3 x 62.
-
what about the 458 win mag if you r looking toward that cal
-
Whats it for? I'm a 375H&H guy though, its a classic.
-
If you're going with a .37 look into that new 375 Ruger. I hear it's a beast.
-
Well if we get to post an option, how about the .358w
