Title: Elk Down ( rougheye)
Post by: rougheye on September 13, 2009, 06:32:06 PM
well , i got home from ak on the 4thand decided to try and go for elk on the opener . Thought i would stay local because i didnt have time to scout . One of my buddies has an any bull tag for the manastash so thats where we started . We were on Bulls most of the morning and had one nice 6 by 6 at 35 yards but the arrow mysteriously went o ver his back  :bash: :bash: :bash: . Day 2 i stayed home after helping one of my other buddies pack out an elk all night . Day 3 . Started off looking for a bull again for my buddy . By 8 : 30 am we hadnt heard or seen anything so we decided to split up and look for the herd . I went to the steepest place i knew  . A nice deep bowl just far enough for people not to want to go in there .  As i decended into the bowl i started hearing bugling and cow calls . It was getting late in the morning and the wind was all wrong so i backed out .   That afternoon i went back in with the wind right thinking i would wait till evening and catch them coming out . At 3:30 in the afternoon i sat on a stump to wait till evening and i hear a bugle . I knew he was close so i started to look around and i saw him walking up the ridge about 80 yards away . I hurried up a trail to get in front of him hoping he would lead me to his girls and he did . they fed towards me but there were so many and they were spread out all around . I was worried that some of them would wind me so i decided it was time . I had a nice cow 54 yards broadside with her head in a bush . I wanted a closer shot but knew i was dead on up to 60 so i was fully confident , put the 50 pin an inch high and released . The arrow looked good and i heard the thump so i waited about 30 minutes and walked to where i shot . When i got there i found my arrow and it reaffirmed what i had thought - perfect shot . Followed the blood for 40 yards and she was dead , right through the heart  . Helps to have good freinds when you 3 miles in and its hotter than hell . Sorry for the crappy pic , cell pic

Good job and congratulations.  My buddy got a nice cow Thursday night; dropped her at the processor yesterday and hanging weight was 295.  Saw lots of critters and they are all looking very fat.....  Again congrats..........
