Title: Cougar calling????
Post by: CoryTDF on September 17, 2009, 09:27:27 AM
Well I'm having a great season so far. I am one tag away from the Washington big game grand slam. All i need to do is fill my cougar tag. This seems like an impossible task as i have never even seen a cougar. I have trail cam pictures and have seen many tracks but never the animal. My question is this..... Can anyboy offer me some advice on what calls to use for this time of year? I have a Foxpro Fury. Is calling the best method? I have my OWN area i would like to hunt. Would anybody who has experience with hunting cougars this way like to come help me out? Just thought i would ask. I'm going to go out next Tuesday and try and call? Seriously, i would really like to fill this tag and if anybody knows how i can get this done i am all ears.

P.S i have read the threads about this but am still hungry for knowledge!

Go to http://www.predatormastersforums.com/forums/ubbthreads.php  and do a search. These guys really know their stuff and are willing to help. "Rainshadow,"Is one of the better callers and he make a cd of cat calls and how to use them. I've had 2 come to a call but one hung up and the other busted me at 50 yards out in heavy cover.  Feel free to PM for more info.

What snag_point said.  Contact Rainshadow.  He lives here in Washington, and has some very good advice on calling cats.  I bought a call and a cd of calls from him and have used them for two seasons.  We've called in five cats, and have shot none.  They are very sneaky and very patient, and they either see one of us move or something else goes wrong, but they can definately be called in.  I've had real good luck with "Rainshadow"s calls, as they are a cat vocalization rather than a prey sound.  (Prey sounds call in coyotes, and, well, I can't pass up popping a good coyote).  I'm going to add a decoy to my setup this year.

Corey, You're going with a bow? (It's bow only here now, then muzzy, then it finally opens up modern.)

If you're serious about it, and work hard, you have a very good chance. I've called at least 3 per year since figuring out what I was doing. Only killed one, only two in the scope, call-in to kill ratio is difficult, especially in Western. You have a great opportunity in the Blue's.

I've been working on sounds, I have over 50 live recorded Cougar vocalizations now, over 20 with the cat wearing a wireless mic. I still have 4 hand call sequences, but I'm going to re-do them very soon with better equipment and alot more knowledge. (Anyonewith my old CD can trade up for $3 s&h.) I'm just building sequences now, but am in desperate need of a skilled sound engineer that I can trust.

Send me a PM, I'll tell you what I have, what I'm developing, and we can talk about your spot and how I'd approach it.

Thanks for the plug, guys! Go get 'em ths year!!!

Looks like you are in touch with the right guy now!

Hmmm, I'd better upgrade my cd.  I know the one I have works.  If the new and improved version is better....well, we must have it!

Shooting for inside of October, Thanksgiving at the latest, but I hope to get it done before then.

Should have had it done already, but I had two different sound guys flake out on me. (I wanted to include some live vocals this time.) Gotta just go for it and get it done....
