I happened upon a herd of Caribou in 1998 just northeast of Republic. Knew it was Caribou as they were herded up and the yellow collars and the funky shape. Anyone else out there see Caribou in WA?
-
I just called my dad on this. He lived in Tonasket and work and a customs inspector up by republic and never heard of any. So that is very interesting.
-
just so you know, anyone who admits to seeing caribou in wa gets one long series of kicks to the junk from me.
nothing screws up access worse than those stupid floppy footed bark eaters.
-
I know a guy who lives in North Port that has seen a few and has a couple of sheds from them. He has also sees grizzlies every once in a while up there. He says that both only come down during REALLY harsh winters. I cant remember what the winter was like that year??

you claim to see a woodland caribou at trail head "a". the WDFW, FS, PETA, OHA, greenpeace......everyone eventually hears about it.....prettysoon trailhead "a" is closed, all roads to, from and around trailhead "a" is closed......seen it happen. still a little bitter.
My advice to you is take a picture and enjoy it, but for cryin' out loud don't share it.

Got ya. :o
-
There are caribou in Idaho so maybe there will be more in Washington in the future.
-
ive heard about the woodland caribou up there...wdfw has a page on their website about them. something about relocating some from northern BC into northeat WA. i dont remember the details but ya, i guess there is a couple of them up there.
-
I read a short bit in I believe Field and Stream, about Caribou migrating through the northeast corner of the state.
-
10 and less years ago there was a good start of caribou in the NE corner of WA. and over into Idaho. Now we have grizzlies and wolves and very few if any caribou :bash: Sorta like lets raise chickens then put some foxes in the pen with them. :bs:
-
Nicely put Idabooner. From what I've been told, they're Mtn Caribou from BC. Here's one of their relatives I killed last year in the Itcha Ilgatchuz's. My outfitter told me the Canadian Government transplated some bou outta this herd to Southern BC, NE Wa, Northern Idaho.
-
Nice Mtn Bou there 257.

the wdfw has said that there is a small herd of woodland caribou that come in and out of washington. they had a program a few years back that got shut down to help save them. i guess there aint enough lichen and the lions are taking there toll on them. i personally do not care about them, and was glad to here that we aint using any more money to try and help them
-
It's a worthwhile program to protect the woodland caribou however we can. There's still a small herd up in the Selkirks.
-
well i remember reading an article in the olympian about how there guna stop the program. the main reason for there numbers falling was somthin to do with lichen which is there main food. but studys from some college showed that lions were having a affect on them too. either way there is plenty of them in canada so thats why i dont care to much bout them. unless we get to hunt more lions from the damgae there doin to the herd ;D
-
Does it seem sort of coincidental that they took down all of the caribou signs and put p wolf signs in their place at all the trailheads in Idaho and NE washington?
-
I tried hunting elk up in the selkirk this past fall and i didnt see any wolf signs but they had plenty of bear signs. and when i came out to my vehicle about mid week in the hunt the forest ranger had stuck a bag full of papers on woodland caribou and grizzly identification under my windshield wiper. that night at dinner in ione i asked one of the locals about the caribou and i almost got laughed outta the place. apparently they are there but not in any sort of numbers.
-
From what Ive read its a very small herd and goes back and forth in between canada idaho and washignton. Grizz sometimes i guess but I would really enjoy grizz itd be fun to hunt grizz!!!!!1
-
grizz, wolves, carabou, moose, sasquatch and god knows whatelse.... they're all up there in the selkirks. them be some spoooooky woods! coming outa those mountains up there at night or hiking in before light always makes me a little more jumpy than normal.
