Title: Bulls in Peola
Post by: Slayock on September 29, 2009, 07:57:11 PM
Went for a drive through Peola last weakend and saw two big bulls.  They were both six points but they were two far away to get a great look and it was getting pretty dark but I could see the royle tines.  The battery went dead on my camera or I would have pics.  Sure wish I had a tag.

Got my Peola "A" bull back in 1992. Nice 6x6 at 311 4/8 near Scoggin Ridge. Much has changed since then but the memories are still fresh and vivid!

Lot's of private land near there and back then getting permission by a clean-cut active duty military guy wasn't hard. (Thanks George!).

Good luck fellow hunters !

did you get it on scoggins land or on the ridge now most of that is owned by a big wig from Spokane and he doesn't give any permission he just lets all his unethical buddies hunt it our land buts up to his, we had a chance at a couple spikes afew years back until they shot at the heard from across the canyon ( 800 yards at least )! your right it has changed up there the fire did it no good the deer hunting is terrible now the elk are still there though!

Yes, we hunted on in the NF just south for 8 days and saw nothing but scattered sign. Finally we drove down to the ranch and talked with the owner for a while (nicest guy and his wife was out driving school bus) and he gave us permission to hunt. So the following morning (Friday the 13th) we seperated at the ranch and I took the northern ridge.  After very slowly still hunting for three hours I spotted a bull on the opposite ridge and took him down with one shot from my trusty old German Mauser bolt action modified to .30-06, using 180 grain Sierra Boat-tail.

The Scoolhouse fire really worked that land over. :( To bad about the "new owners", so much FAMILY farm/ranch land has gone the way of big corporations. :dunno:

George is still up there, he's a good ol boy I shot a big whitetail buck below his place a little ways a few years back.  The school fire sure tore that country up but its a little more open now.  There is deffinately some good country up there but its mostly all private. If you know the people up there its a great place to hunt.

I agree..also some of that ground is being chopped up more and more.  I met Larry Scoggins several years ago on my elk hunt, he helped me get my bull nice guy.  There are a lot of bulls in some of that country.

If you go down pataha spur road ( we call mud road ) and take a right toward columbia center you go about 1\4 of a mile and all to the left for quite a ways that hill side and the canyon on the back side of it I think it is called Leland land co.  the sad thing about his land is that he won't let you deer hunt it even though he doesn't because he doesn't want the elk disturbed, I understand where he is coming from except for one thing come opening morning most of the elk are out of his land then all the pressure splits them up and they get pushed on to his land! or Wolfs land! IF you are that close to pataha creek come opening morning of elk pm me and I might show you what I'm talking about I have the system figured out ALMOST I can't get the spikes to do what all the others do! >:(  P.S. DO you know what the Pomeroy land owners is I seen a lot of signs on the east side of Sweeney to knotgrass rd?  got thought I would ask.
