Title: scent eliminator or cover scent?
Post by: BIGINNER on October 02, 2009, 08:24:37 AM: what do you guys use for coyotes? does it help alot? or am i better off just trying to stay downwind? i went out last night to try to get a coyoye, but no luck veriable winds, so i couldn't really stay downwind, had one howling back at me but didn't show,

The key is to try to do it with some elevation so hopefully your wind carries over them until they are in range. You won't get them as close, but you will see a lot of animals. My other theory (unproven) is that sometimes they are probably accustomed to a little human scent once in a while, and may even associate it with food. IE wounded game, gutpile, carcass being dropped off, etc. Even if they smell you, they may be curious enough to come take a look. :twocents:

OR NOT SOUNDING EXACTLY LIKE A WOUNDED RABBIT OR WHATEVER ELSE CALL YOU'RE USING? I WENT OUT ABOUT 4 TIMES TO TRY TO GET A COYOTE, AND I ONLY HAD ONE COME. I KNOW I'M DOING SOMETHING WRONG, BUT WHAT? NOT WALKING AWAY FROM THE ROAD FAR ENOUGH? BAD JOB CALLING, TOO MUCH MOVEMENT, ( I DON'T MOVE) WIND? CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT FIGURE THIS OUT, THANKS

#1 - Coyotes need to be in hearing distance of your calls
#2 - You can't be detected when they are coming in.

You had one come in so you did something right. Sometimes you go on cold streaks where you don't get any action. Without being out there with you, noone will be able to tell you if you are doing something wrong. Just keep at it, when you are exploring new areas look for fresh sign, pay attention to where the tracks are going and coming from. Go out at sunset, midnight, and daylight and try to hear them howling. Take not of where you hear them and get close to those areas, undetected, and call. The more you get out, the more scouting you can do, the more you will learn.

We can only brainstorm ideas on here. If you have specifics about a certain situation we can try to come up with a reason, but ultimately only the coyote knows why they reacted the way they did.
