Title: Wife's First animal, a WA Moose!
Post by: Wanttohuntmore on October 04, 2009, 08:24:38 AM
Well we headed over on the 1st, due to some commitments my wife had on the 30th.   When we arrived, we had about 2 hours of time left to hunt that evening.  On the way in, we ran into Elkspert and Zack, and their nice 48" bull.  Made my 2001 bull pale in comparison!  Elkspert mentioned 2 other HuntWa members were up there, Shane and Ridgerat.  We drove in about 15 minutes, and immediately saw about a 37" bull.  Got the wife excited.  We had her in position to shoot and then noticed antlers.  Still, a good start to a long weekend.  We drove another 15 minutes, and came around a corner, and just off the trail was a cow, just standing there, at 40 FEET!!!!  She could have shot it, but it had a calf with it, and it was getting dark soon, and being the first 30 minutes of the hunt, decided to let it pass.  About that time, we saw another nice bull, about a low 40" bull.  I believe it might have been Shane's bull, being that where he got his was in the same draw, and they look very similar.  We watched it, then decided to keep moving, to get a lay of the land.  A lot has changed in the 8 yrs since I've been there.  We kept going up, eventually to the top and to a road that takes us back to camp.  The trails are thicker then before, but still passable.  The wife didn't like the thick trails, but we came out alive!

So next morning, Friday the 2nd, we head in, and right away run into Ridgerat and his buddy with a tag.  They were heading for some old landing to see if they could see a bull they saw the previous day, we wanted to head up into another canyon, so we went up.  We ran into a very little bull, a 2 point, no palms at all.  Ended up coming back when we saw Ridgerat below us, pointing above as.  We backtracked a little, and wife noticed a cow up above us about 300 yards.  We knew there was a trail above it, so we went up, hiked out the trail, and ended up 35 feet from the Cow.  Wife shot it, a little far back, it bedded down in the thick stuff at about 40 feet out.  She ended up taking 2 more shots at the head, missed, then one in the chest which did the trick.  She was all grins.  The scope even kissed her forehead.  Not a bad way to start a hunting career.

Awesome job and congratulations to your wife. A moose as a first is a fine introduction to hunting.

Thanks everyone, wife is reading this now, finally seems to show interest in the stories as well!  Yes, it's a REM600 in 308.  I've had it since 83, and it's previous owner killed african game, moose, 'bou, and elk with it.  I've taken deer, goat, bear, yotes with it.  My sis took a 3x3 blacktail with it as well.  Just seems to work well.  I semi retired it in 92, but find myself packing it once in awhile.  It's really quite a sweet shooting little gem.  I have it's younger brother too, in 243, the first rifle I took a deer with.
