When is peak mule deer rut?
Thanks
-
For Wa. I think early to mid Nov.
-
Depends on the area of the state really. I know in the NE they start rutting in Oct. but in the Methow its generally around the first week in November.
-
Id love to be hunting them in the rut! Hey phool when do they start rutting in montana?
-
They start about the first week but by the third week they are so rut dumb you can go right up to them. We watched this guy come from a few hundred yards, walk right in front of us and just kept going. We could have slapped him on the ass, he didn't even care about us.
You can see his tongue out licking the air, he had a hot doe somewhere up wind.

Just how i like them....DUMB! :chuckle:

So by mid November, the rut in the south side of Washington would be over?
-
Thats a good looking buck..
-
I've seen 2 muley bucks with swollen necks pushing does already. ;)

No, I said thats typically when they start. From my experience they are still rutting somewhat into December.
-
the buck i shot last friday was following around 2 does and when the one would pee he was right there sniffing it and doing the ol lip curl.

Our grassland deer here in the Southeast don't usually start hitting it hard until the 2nd or 3rd week in Nov. They are usually going hot and heavy around Thanksgiving. You will still see them chasing late does into Dec.
Mountain bucks in the Blues are a little more difficult to pinpoint, they're so sparse it's hard to get a good reading. The mountain buck I shot in mid-Oct last season was already pretty swelled up. He was living at about 4,000 feet.

Well, If I only got to pass on my seed once or twice a year, I'd get pretty darn dum with only one thing on my mind too!

I saw groups of doe's up round 5000 feet this weekend. I can tell you one thing.. There isn't any sort of rut going right now yet. The gurls could have cared less that I was there, and there certainly wasn't any boys chasing them.

shoot, I'm not limited to once a year and I can still do a pretty good impression of an idiot when my "neck" swells up.... :chuckle:

Your killin' me Phool. I am counting the days til my Montana hunt (NOV 13th through 22nd).
-
Very cool, we will be leaving the 14th

In my experience the Mule Deer rut is a little earlier than the WT here in Washington and Montana. First week of Nov. the bucks are following does and by the third week it's on!!!
-
Saturday morning along the Breaks of the Snake River here in ID we saw two young muley bucks trying to kill eachother for about 2 minutes over a doe that was there... they weren't exactly chasing her but they were pretty darn serious about pushing eachother around!
Up in the wilderness areas of the state I've seen muleys ruttin good n hard the middle of october.... My opinion is it just depends on where you are in the state and what the bucks feel like doing!

I don't know Jack about whitetails, but last week I was on the North end of Spokane and watched a bachelor group of 5 bucks for a while in the evening. Two pairs started sparring fairly aggressively. They were really raising a cloud of dust and I could hear the antlers clacking for quite a while after it got dark. Seemed too early for that but maybe the pecking order gets figured out pretty early.
-
In the N.E. corner it usually starts end of Oct. 1st week of Nov......just ahead of the whitetail rut. :twocents:
-
If I saw a buck like the one phool posted, I woulda killed him .

I had the late muzzleloader tag for the Kahlotus unit in '06, opened on Nov. 20. Never saw any sign of rut in the few bucks I saw. Appeared that the rut was fully done by that time. Last year, I saw multiple bucks rutting in the last week of Oct.
