Well, I'm just back for the day to sort out some transportation problems. Heading out again later tonight or tomorrow ~0300. Saw a few cows, nothing shootable. After a really long, hard day of hunting yesterday I got back to my rig after dark to find this:

Got a shoulder under it and managed to bend the end enough to get the weight off the hood and backed out from under it. Hunting alone has a down side.

My inlaws live on the North end of Spokane.  We made a family trip over there for the week and I made day hunts out to public land sections in 124.  Deer are absolutely everywhere on low elevation private land, but pretty scarce up in the hills.  I'd see 1-2 deer per day in the woods and 20-30 while driving there and back.  Lots of historical sign like trails and old rubs that would suggest lots of deer, but very few seen or jumped.  Looked like maybe winterkill might have been part of it as they had a ton of snow last year, combined with nice weather, full moon, dry noisy woods until Friday, it was tough hunting but a good hunt anyway.  Passed on two shot opportunities on small does, saw 2 nice bucks but no shots.  Should have shot a couple coyotes.  Got frustrated trying to access state land that's landlocked by posted private land.

Jumped 3 deer with no shot opportunity.  Saw a coyote for about 5-10 seconds, just enough time to put the big eyes on him.  had a doe come in on the edge of a clear cut about 120 yards out.  No shot.

help EpQ21 with his first bear.

Waiting for late season now.

Family scored three deer within a few days of each other.  Total deer seen was around 40 for three days.  Couple of bucks,  but mostly does and fawns.  Helped that we had any deer tags.  Blacktail are difficult to hunt of the southwest part of the state,  tends to be thick.  Deer or no deer still a great time.

Made it to 200 yards of two 3 point muledeer, wind was blowing so I did not want to risk it with the muzzy.
Saw over 70 does, spikes and two pointers mostly just before dark, moon was out and very windy all five days. Nice camping trip with my buddies :)

Put a lot of miles on the old body over the two weekends seeking the elusive buck.  It was the hail mary stalk at 6:00 on Sunday night down a canyon that I figured wouldn't produce a buck but I thought I should walk before I gave up and headed home.  I walked right past 15 does (I looked back about 500 yards at the path I was walking and they were standing right where I had been) and figured that was all I was in for till dark.  I headed to a little honey hole where there is a spring at an old homestead.  Its the only water for about 2 or so miles of pasture/wheat ground.  On the skyline I noticed a huge bodied deer working his way toward the water hole.  I swung my chubby body into high gear and got to the water hole before he popped out of the draw that fed into the canyon.  I couldn't wait much longer as the sun was dropping fast.  I snuck down to the creek bottom and used the rocky bottom to take me to the bottom of the draw and the dang thing was gone!  The last I saw he was headed almost at a trot down the draw before he went ouf ot sight.  Must have smelled me, but I decided to head up the draw to see where he went.  Just about at the top the 3x4 mulie jumped up about 145 yards away.  He looked straight at me for about 2 minutes.  I steadied a rest and he finally turned to the side and gave me a great full on side view.  A little smoke later and my dad, son and I are dragging the buck back to the pickup.  I hit him a little farther back then I wanted but it got the job done.  I hit him about 1.5 miles from the truck.  He headed straight down hill and ran down the canyon while I reloaded and chased it butt down.  I found him laying in a heap about 300 yards from the pickup.  Nice little drag down hill, but he was heavy wtih a lot of fat.  I am headed out to mow the yard, then bone out the meat, but will add a pic tonight when I get a chance.
Back straps sound a lot better than the tag stew I ate the past couple of years.

Well I literally just got back from 9 days of crawling on my belly chasing muleys followed by three days of helping my buddies chase elk.  I am tired!  I saw some monster muleys and missed a shot over the back at 183 yards on a bruiser.  I had to pass up a shot at 50 yards on two legal bucks that passed right in front of me as they were ten yards onto an adjacent property that I did not have permission to hunt.  The rest of the story is too painful to tell right now but I'll write up a big post later that will include my run in with a cougar!

This is my first roosevelt.  I have an inline, but this gun was given to me by my grandfather when he got too old to hunt, so I decided to use it instead.  Traditional blackpowder is more fun anyway.

Being home on R&R, I only had two days to hunt.
First day I saw a beautiful five point bull elk and a nice smaller four point.  But, with it being early muzzle, I had to be satisfied with looking but not touching.  :chuckle:

Then the second day I saw four small bucks (1 spike and 3 forkies) within twenty yards, but I was hunting a 3-point unit!  :bash:

Oh well.  It was nice being out with Dad anyway.

Well, this was my first year hunting with a ml. Opening day, didn't see much until just before dark.  Then came around a bend in a road and walking towards us is a monster 6x6.  As soon as it saw us he turned and ran dead away from me.  Aimed for the back of his neck at about 75 yards and flat out missed.  Watched it run away up and out of sight before I could do anything.   :bash:
Not the best way to start out the year.  Would have been a great first elk, but at the same time it would be damn hard to beat next time.  At least thats what I told myself all week to help me sleep at night.  Saw a few elk the next day, but just flashes of brown in the timber and nothing but bear and deer the rest of the week.  Still got the late season, but low expectations.

Gadwall, I love the fit and feel of the elkhorn.  Shoots great and is a breeze to clean.  Gotta ask if you had any issues with factory sight alignment.  My rear sight was drilled wrong, but I was able to dial it in.  Just put a Williams peep on it and that definitely fixed it, and is way better on the eyes.

Question, why are there so many pictures with muzzleloaders laying in the rack? I'm a modern guy and have never wanted to go muzzle loading, i like shooting 300+ if i need too. I've killed alot of deer and never have i ever put my 7mm in the rack of a deer. I've never even taken a picture with my gun next to a deer i've killed. Maybe its a muzzle thing?

...We had been on the Elk for a couple of days, no good shots but some fun watching. 4 or 5 cows, a couple of branch antler (4x4) and (2x3) and a few unknown, we stalked into our area and took about a five minute break and just as we started to move, the place came unglued. We had stalked into the middle of the herd. The one good look I got was the spike running down the hill,so I gave a blow with old reliable (hyper-lip single) and he stopped about 30 yards away behind some scrub, another hit on the call and he stepped into a shooting lane. I am completly sold on the hyper-lip, three years in a row it's brought the bulls back.

My story really isn't that exciting.  We headed for Pullman Friday after Thanksgiving.  Got there about 1:00pm.  Spent the rest of the day getting land use permission, we ended up getting permission for the entire weekend  from about 4 farms whose land connects.  Made camp down on the snake.  Woke up and spotted a nice 3X4 muley with some does too bad gmu 142 is closed.  Drove around hunted some new areas we havent hit before with no luck. We did however watch some dude shoot at a buck from over 500 yards WTF.  We headed to our "area"  my buddy dropped me off and headed to the other end of our spread, the plan- meet in the middle at last light.  I get about a 1/4 mile from where I was dropped off, crest a rise and BAM, here is this big buck grazing in a no hunting area, i headed to some uncut wheat and sit down,  I watch him for about 10 min, then out of the blue here is 3pt and a doe.  The big dude chases off the 3pt and starts following the doe around with his nose up her a$$.  He gives up on her and heads up in to a stand of trees about 700 yard way.  The "little" buck shows back up and starts grazing, the doe hop's the fence on to the property im on, I think to myself well at least I have a chance on a doe.  I keep watching this 3pt, he is slowly working his way towards me.  My buddy radios me, he just dropped a doe not more the 200 yards from the truck, in the middle of my converstion with him, BIG dude comes back out of the trees chasing another doe.  They both hop the fence on to the same property im on, then go behind a little rise.  I belly crawl to the top of the rise.  there is both does and this guy.  My heart is pounding as he walks away from the does towards  me.  He gets about a 120 yards from me broadside and I squeeze the trigger. double lung hit he runs about a 100 yards and drops.  I hit him with a 385 grain polymere sabot.  I tried to measrure him and i came up with about 128 i have no idea if that is even close. so thats my story and Im sticking to it.

Here's my west side late "any elk" unit bull taken on Decmeber 12th.  I used my .62 Thompson Center Hawken, home cast round ball and 90 gr of Goex 2f.  The shot was about 50 yards through both lungs and he went about 14 yards.  Those Roosevelts are pretty heavy at any size, especially when you have to pack it out yourself...painfull, but in a good way if you know what I mean!

The barrel started out life as a Green Mountain .62 smoothbore.  I sent it to Ed Rayl in Virginia and he rifled it 1:72 for round balls.  I use an old Lee production pot and Lee .600 mold that throws a 325 gr ball.

Welcome to the site EyeGuard....Nice Bull, I think I remember seeing Hirsheygirl post it on here. Your girlfriend shot a cow too didn't she? Along with some big ole bucks. Congrats to you both.

The last two deer seasons I have shot a buck and been quite pleased with them.  The next day hirsheygirl has shot a buck and both times they were larger than mine.   :'( But I got her in the end when I told her it was a cow only hunt ;)  Thanks for the welcome.
