Title: What to do with Raccoons (dead) (now with pix)
Post by: usmc74 on October 05, 2009, 04:35:38 PM
We want to harvest our own grapes this year, so I've been attacking the raccoons.  Last year "they" got all of them.  I do have the small game license.

My question is, what are they good for?  Hides, sell to the low rent diners, what else?

The weekend count is 9.  Biggest was a 23 lb female.

I would just go through them out in the woods, hides can't be worth too much.   :dunno:

Wine infused coon sounds great.  Turn'em into Coyote bait/food.  I say keep shooting them.

I have ony had one come in since then.  He ran before I got out there.

I think they have me on the "do not call" list

The large one had substantial head trauma, I don't think he would have been a good mounting candidate.

Come to think of it, they all have head trauma. 8)

The count is now 15

if you can get them alive, work on some cross breeding, see if you can get a beaglecoon.

otherwise, raccoon sandwiches.

Get all the fat off, good stew.  I think with that many you'd have enough for a batch of bratwurst.  I bet that would be awesome.

Just be careful handling them, really good idea to glove up.  Raccoons carry a roundworm, Baylisascaris, that causes severe - even fatal - disease in humans.

You wouldn't need to gut them, but don't forget the backstrap.  The key is to get all the fat off whatever else you do.

I fed a batch of stew to a non-hunting friend's family once, he knew what it was.  Everyone liked it and his two young girls asked for more even after finding out what it was.

I wish I had that many coons around my place! I'd have the entire garage covered with coon hides. That's way cooler than painting it. :chuckle:

Wife had me stop :(.  The cat takes off running whenever he sees me at the door (he seen what happens to the coons).  She's afraid the cat will have a breakdown.

The final count was 18
