I have been reading all the moose threads and am getting worked up. I have 8 pts and (hopefully will be drawn sometime in the next 20 years) I hunt with traditional archery and if/when drawn plan to use my 1941 Nels Grumley T/D Bush Bow. Any bull moose would be a trophy to me, but what unit has the highest density of moose and reasonable probability of finding a decent bull ?
All units seem to have good numbers and I have been applying for 1. 49*N A, 2. Selkirk A, 3. Mt.Spokane A, 4. Huckleberry A.
With all the nice bulls out of Hangman I wonder if I should be picking different units.
What units do you suggest?
Because I have 8 pts what hunt should be my first choice?

I have a cabin in the threeforks area and have seen some monster bulls there. that is where I would like to get drawn as I know the area well. The others I would need a little help to point me in the right direction. That is another reason I love this site....alot of people willing to help with a hunter who has drawn oil. Not honey holes just a starting point. I only have 7 points so I am not holding my breath any time soon.

Two hard parts to getting a moose, one getting the tag, two after the bull hits the ground. Pick the units you know best there isn't a bad moose unit out there. Hangman is all private land however.
-
I'll take any moose tag that permits a bull. Even if I take a small one it would be great. I'll hire boneaddict to call em in if I ever draw.

:yeah:

i was just elk hunting up in 49 and saw 14 different moose in 5 days of hunting, and 0 elk

Heck if you wanted to see elk you should go moose hunting :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

i'll copy down the 4 choices that the moose whisperer takes and plug them in to my app's next year.

As I stated before ANY moose would be a trophy for me, but because I dont plan on passing for a bigger one, which unit do you think has the most mature bulls? I plan on putting in the work once drawn, I just want an opinion on what should be my first choice.I am not asking for specifics, just what hunt choice should be #1. I dont think I would be stealing someones spot because it is an OIL Permit, I also am not against having one of you experienced moose-murderers help me/accompany me.

Threeforks doesn't have any bulls :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Just kidding. I think if your going for meat then I would look at which place has the most public land to hunt. Most hold decent numbers of moose. Some are a little thicker with brush, some a little more open. The P.O. can be pretty thick. Huckleberry a little more open.

all the luck from everyone on here with moose tags i don't think you can go wrong with any of them
-
All of them for me since I can only get the raffle or gov. tag now :chuckle:
-
yeah that, lol.
the reality is that all units have great bulls in them, most tagholders shoot the first one they get a chance at, for some its a dandy that wanders into range, for others its a smaller bull. i'm convinced its not the unit, its the ability of the hunter to keep his finger off the trigger.
-
Don't get me wrong, if it was about the meat I would apply for the antlerless tags with a higher probability of getting drawn (or buy a side of beef) I know there is a decent moose in all units and I do know a good spot in Huckleberry. (I just heard one, didn't see it)
The purpose of this poll is just to get an opinion on which unit has the highest probability of the first legal bull being a mature animal, not neccessarily huge, but respectable.
It will most likely be years until I get drawn and this is only an opinion poll, I will most likely apply as I have been. I just was curious because of the size and score of the bulls coming out of a unit that has fewer permits (7), applicants, and lower points average to draw (7 again) to the ones I have been (12-22 with an 8.5 average)

from what i have seen, every tag holder in the state has a great oppertunity at a boone and crockette bull. there just arent the number of hunters to get all the big ones. just have to hunt for a big one and let little ones go.
plenty of big bulls for all of the tag holders.

Saw 6 moose last year in Mt. Spokane.....one hit the ladder stand so hard that I thought I was going to fall out and land on the big bulls back I don't think I would have made it the whole eight seconds. ;)
-
Very interesting poll so far, with 200"ers running around in the Three Forks I would have thought it would have been leading the poll. :dunno:

I dont think it matters.. Id gladly take any one of them and with the limited amount of tags there are bruisers in all of them. I'm holding out for the first methow moose tag. :P
