Ok Here's the story, but first to answer the Q's. This was 117, but let me very clear this was as diffclut of a hunt as any out there. Our motto for the week was 50% fun and 50% hell. We scouted all summer which= lots of gas, time and money and did lots of research. I just dont want to give any impression that this where you should go, i'm not sure i will next year. I pretty much covered the whole unit to get an elk. even after getting 3 spikes on camera in aug. We figured we walked about 20 miles over all. Moleskin for blisters and ibuprofen for so muscles and magnesium and bannas for muscle cramps. So please after reading this you want to go there please reconsider. If your hardcore go for it. Also where i got this bull wasn't from any area suggested from this forum. But i still thank everyone for the advice. The hoof in the pic is from the bull loaded on a little trailer we pulled behind a four wheeler. I didnt see it either till it was mentioned. We almost didnt get a group photo. The camera was set on a stump. It was awesome to have my son and nephew there with us. They are real troopers to keep up all week. My brother in law and his son started the hunt opening day where we got the spikes on film and didnt see anything i came up sundaynight and got there about 1am and got up @ 4am. Where we hunted monday morning was so thick we did more harm than good. I did hear a cow call through the brush but did not see her.

(Continued)So we decided to go to another spot that i scouted during summer and cut some track and scat. Its a 2 1/2 mile walk to get where i saw the sign. We got there about 5pm and totally wiped out. I kept going while they rested and glassed from the ridge. I walked about 1/2 mile up logging road and heard an elk bark from across canyon after a couple minutes of glassing i spotted about 12 elk the bull cows and calves. I colud barely see them with naked they were on the same rd i was on but clear across which was probably a mile to a mile and half. I decide to run down get bro. He spotted about 10-15 more elk lower than others with 3 spikes. We figured we had 3 choices; stay on rd and try to make it across before light and with them probably seeing us or head down and hope to catch them going to water(they were headed down for water) it was a steep it could or leave them and try next morning. we decided to run across and take chance of not making it before they headed down. if we didint make it we figured no harm done. so we ran up canyon till legs were rubber but we soon realized we would make it with enough light. once we got on same side as them we seen a cow 400yds above us she started to bark. we both got drawn for anterless tags this year. so we kept going hoping to cut her off from rest and it worked and we gor 206 yrdsform her but i passed on the shot. my gun is zeroed @ 150 but i knewe there wwas others. we went alittle further and seen two more cows below us @ 216 yrds . I passed again. They barked and ran off. (Cont)

(cont)We did hear the bull bugle sometime when all thi s was going on. we kept going down rd keeping the high ground to see more. The traks startied pelklling off rd but htere were a couple stes still on rd so we kept going then my bro heard some right in fornt of us around ridge then i heard something below us and throught the brush i seen an antler but wasnt positive so i motioned my bro over and he said blow cow call. idid and it turned and i was sure it was a bull so i could see its head and neck in brush only because they are dark. It was around 40 yds. i aimed and shot at the head my bro shot right after me aiming for body. it disappeard in the smoke. we waited 30 mins till 6:35 we found it piled up lessthan 30yds below us it was laying with its chin up in air so i dint know how big it was till i rolled it over. we were very excited to say the least it had one bullet hole in it right behind right ear and no exit hole. im looking forward to seeing that bullet. 295gr power belt 50.cal T/C hawkens. We hunt all week till thurs night got into a couple cows but no shot. We went hunting for a memory with an elk tag and got both!!
