Title: Blacktail rut question
Post by: elkaholic_74 on October 19, 2009, 09:18:33 AM
I have been told 2 different answers on this subject and I'm very curious to see what you guys think. When the blacktail rut begins if a mature doe still has yearlings with her will she still go into estrus? I've been told that no she wont at all or not maybe til the late post rut and I've also been told that a buck will run the yearlings off thus causing the doe to estrus. If anyone has any info they would like to share I'm eager to hear it fact or opinion!  Thx and good luck everyone!!

After doing some research I may have found the answer to my own question. It seems that as a doe enters estrus she will push her yearlings away until she is bred. Once successfully bred the doe will allow the yearling does to rejoin her but the yearling bucks are not, they are ran off to find there own territory which apparently is natures way of preventing inbreeding. You guys probably already knew this and dont care, but if you wondered there you go take it for what its worth.

This is precisely why fawn bleats will often bring bucks in during the pre-rut.  Bucks feel that a doe may be in the area and will often come in quickly to check things out.  I filmed a P&Y Iowa buck come in on the run from over 200 yards away after a series of 5-8 fairly loud fawn bleats.  He was killed at 5 yards as he approached our stands (I was filming in a separate stand).  We created something from nothing.  It was dead all morning until we tried calling.  10 minutes later we were dragging out a huge buck.
