Title: 6.5x55
Post by: ribka on October 19, 2009, 11:26:30 AM
I just purchased a CZ model 550 ( kevlar stock)  in 6.5x55 swede.
Mounted a scope and took it out yesterday.

Using Federal fusion 140 gr.

I really like how it shot and the 2 stage trigger on the CZ is a nice option.
Also shot my tikka 30-06 and Browning BAR .243. All shot well.
After shooting the CZ I really liked the trigger more than my other rifles.

This cartridge is really pleasant to shoot. I shot a box of 20 rds and still enjoyable to shoot.

My light Tikka 30-06 beat me up after 10 rds.

I know that most commercial ammo in the US is a bit weak so plan on handloading. Purchased one box of RWS 140 gr, ($36.00) expensive but a much hotter load than Federal.

Any suggestions with reloading this round?

I've reloaded 100 gr ballistic tips (was going to use them on cous whitetail in AZ) up to 140 gr sierra boat tails.  I've settled on 120 grain nosler BT or 125 partitions.  Shoots to the same point.  47 grains of H4350 for both.  This is max according to Nosler so be sure to consult a manual and work up. I want to load some 160 grain bullets and see how they work on a cow elk.

Thank you for the info

Have also been doing some research on heavier bullets. As you know the 6.5 has a great ballistic coefficient.
Think will try this year for deer in ID and WI with a heavier bullet with this rifle. Have shot a lot of different rifles and calibers and really liked how this caliber performed. I was shooting at about 150 yds at a 2"x 2" piece of tape on the target and it was like shooting a .22 cal. rifle.

That is the exact rifle and caliber that I am thinking about picking up next. Where did you find it? Seems like an awesome combo.

I found it on Gunbroker. Can also try Gunsamerica and Auctionarms.  i looked at the TIKKA and SAKO 85. I decided on CZ for the price. I like the mauser action

As I mentioned a real joy to shoot

I have a 6.5-06 which is just a bit more poop then the sweede. what I have found is that the lower velocities allow use of even the sierra match bullets. the sd is so high on the 6.5's and the velocities are low so "cheap" bullets do extremly well.
