Title: pend oreille opener
Post by: parrydog on October 19, 2009, 05:15:47 PM
Hit the Pend Oreille river for the waterfowl opener this weekend.  Sat. found us sitting in our usual blind.  Between the two of us we got 8 ducks, probably could have squeeked out a limit if we had shot every thing that came in, pretty slow day.  Sun. I went by myself and tried jump shooting some new spots, got three ducks should have had a limit but I missed a few times.  Very few birds on the river from what I could see.  Oh well it was good to be out.

I hunted out of Cusik on the little river on Sat. Between the 4 of us we got 20 ducks. Should have had more but our newbies had a hard time with jump shooting. Like scaring the birds away by sky blasting at some Geese. But it was fun even with all the fog.

What kind of birds do you get up there? Where on the river do you go? I have only hunted close to home in the Wenatchee area.... more on the coumbia Brewster, Pateros, Entiat, then Moses Lake and Potholes areas.....  it would be sweet to go up there.... the river looks like there are a lot of good spots.

Right now we get alot of young gadwells and widgon. Some teal and shovlers. In a few weeks or as it cools down we see more green heads and more mature gadwell. In Dec and Jan. we get allmost all diver ducks. Good numbers of Red heads, ring necks, scaups and more widgon. With Geese spread out thru the season.  I mainly hunt down by the paper mill area. I use a lay out blind and stay below high water. Just watch the late season or extreme cold time, I have seen the river freeze solid.
