2. Don't hunt with idiots if you can help it
3. Just because someone is shooting at it, doesn't necessarily mean it's legal
To his credit (especially for a young guy), he called himself in and took the ticket. $1,000-plus later... well, it probably won't surprise you to hear that the idiot-buddy never felt obligated to "help" with the ticket either...

It's almost to bad that if you do turn yourself in for a mistake that you get fined so heavily. Yet in the other thread about Trespassing it's only a $325 fine.
Considering the civil restitution for illegally killing a deer is $2,500, plus the criminal fine, he DID get a break at $1,000+. I think we should be harsh on any mistake that involves pulling a trigger, as all such mistakes are inexcusable and violate every rule of firearms safety.

Yeah, a guy that worked for me learned that lesson. His buddy was blasting away at a "3 point" mulie, couldn't hit it. So he flips out the bipod legs and drops him with a single shot. Got over to the deer and it is only a 2 point. :yike:

i hate to admit it but if i ever shot a 2 point in a 3 point min unit i would do everything i could to get it home, no sense in paying $1000 for a simple mistake, ive heard of a coupla people doing this now where they see a buck, confirm 3 points and shoot only to walk up and discover that the deers head was turned just right to look like a 3 point when in actuallity it wasnt, flame away i wouldnt let the deer go to waste, id even use my tag on it, but no way in hell am i turnin myself in

it could have been very easy to get within a couple hundred yards to take a shot and hope there was a 3rd point somewhere. luckily i have good ethics.
i would have made a stlk on them but it was getting late, and i figure i would have had the next morning to try and find them. but ended up having to call it a day due to my girlfriend being really sick. :bash:

The reason they still give you a ticket, is so that people just don't go blasting away, then call a warden if they shoot the wrong thing, get a free pass, then keep on hunting...

This is a big issue, I have seen a few people do this. I had my son at one event. I was not happy with it the other gut had 2 kids with him. The dad shot a 2 pt. 30 yards in front of use, i was new to the area Twisp. I wasnt sure if it was a special permit or what later found out it wasnt or i would have went off on him in front of the whole canyon. People need to figure it out/ Dont shoot till you know what it is. I try to teach my son that but i hear some peaple cant figure it out. Personally, I have not shot at legal animals due to doubts and have never regretted that decision.
But then again, I like hunting more than I like dragging an animal out of the woods.
That's why I Archery hunt with trad equipment.

We passed on one that we thought was legal. Good optics are an absolute must while mule deer hunting.:yeah:
In 2002 (my second year hunting here in the SE), I passed on 2 bucks that I am pretty sure had 3rd points, but I just wasn't positive. Ate tag soup that year too. That year I replaced my rifle scope and bought a spotting scope..

There are two reasons I hunt. One is because I love to do it and the other is I want the meat. I believe antler resrictions are good because in most cases it puts age on deer. Age on deer (in most cases) makes for larger deer. Larger deer means more meat in the freezer. I pass on deer that will only go 100 pounds at the butcher to try and get one that goes 150 pounds at the butcher. You will rarley see that on a forked horn unless it's a really big forky. The extra meat means alot to me. Just my :twocents:

I have disagreed with the antler restrictions from the get-go.
In so many cases the experimental guidelines have failed. If we could give citation for failure the dept would be in trouble.
I can only imagine how many wasted kills there will be with the new true spike regs.

Opening weekend up at Entiat, there was 2 point shot and killed right up the road from our camp and a couple of others in camp came acrossed a barly legal 3 pint that some one left to waste because they were not sure if it was a full 3 point. One of the kids taged it in camp so it would not go to waste. We measured out the eye gaurd and it hit the 1" mark, barely. Who ever shot it drapped it over a stump and left it. Along with the deer they droped ther hunting knofe s they picked up the knife also.
Today I saw 3, 2 points up around Bald Mt Road, could not grow a third point on any of them :bash: :bash: so we are with ut deer this year. Hopefully we can connect durring late season (west side).
