opening day in the entiat we hear someone throwing alot of lead quickly then near the end of the day we drop into another ravine we found out what the shooting was about 2pt deer shot in the leg then in the chest >:( >:( >:(nothing pisses me off more then seeing that. take the time to make sure they have the points then make sure you can make the shot
-
proably some d asses lobbing shells like crazy and never went over to check for blood and proably didnt ever even know it was a 2 pt. that is the stuff that makes us all look bad hate that too. my dad says stupid people are breeding faster that the sane ones. I think there may be alot of truth to that do you?
-
Ya I would be happy with a 10 percent increase in tags if they would promise it went to more Fish and Game Officers.
-
thats funny cause it is true!! :yeah:
-
Yeah, a guy that worked for me learned that lesson. His buddy was blasting away at a "3 point" mulie, couldn't hit it. So he flips out the bipod legs and drops him with a single shot. Got over to the deer and it is only a 2 point. :yike:
buddy says "Oops. :dunno: I could have sworn he had a third..."
Lessons learned:
1. Confirm it YOURSELF before shooting
2. Don't hunt with idiots if you can help it
3. Just because someone is shooting at it, doesn't necessarily mean it's legal
To his credit (especially for a young guy), he called himself in and took the ticket. $1,000-plus later... well, it probably won't surprise you to hear that the idiot-buddy never felt obligated to "help" with the ticket either...
-
It's almost to bad that if you do turn yourself in for a mistake that you get fined so heavily. Yet in the other thread about Trespassing it's only a $325 fine.

Considering the civil restitution for illegally killing a deer is $2,500, plus the criminal fine, he DID get a break at $1,000+. I think we should be harsh on any mistake that involves pulling a trigger, as all such mistakes are inexcusable and violate every rule of firearms safety.

I personally found 3 two-points dead last year. Two right off the road, and one while out hunting. Just missed whoever shot it, he called his buddy who came hauling ass out through a wheat field to pick him up. I crested the hill just as they were mobbing back to the road. Little guy too, no chance that it should have even been accidentally identified as having a hint of a third point or eye-guard. Ran into a game warden in that area who had two dead two-points in his truck and asked him how many others had been reported. Seven on top of the two that he had in the back of his truck, plus the one that I found.(The two along the road had already been reported when I called) >:(

reminds me of a dumba$$ up near Republic one day that shot a 3pt Mule deer back when it was closed for Mulies during late season, He saw that big white rump and thought it was a Whitetail. :o Some people just dont belong.

i hate to admit it but if i ever shot a 2 point in a 3 point min unit i would do everything i could to get it home, no sense in paying $1000 for a simple mistake, ive heard of a coupla people doing this now where they see a buck, confirm 3 points and shoot only to walk up and discover that the deers head was turned just right to look like a 3 point when in actuallity it wasnt, flame away i wouldnt let the deer go to waste, id even use my tag on it, but no way in hell am i turnin myself in
-
I will be the first. In my opinion that makes you just as bad as a poacher. The stories you heard where someone confirmed it was a 3pt is bs they did not confirm anything exept they should not be hunting :twocents:
-
yea i had a couple very nice 2pts at about 900 yards last tuesday over in umtanum. it was to late for a stalk and i wasnt close enough to see if they had any little kickers or a 3rd point anywhere. so i didnt both
it could have been very easy to get within a couple hundred yards to take a shot and hope there was a 3rd point somewhere. luckily i have good ethics.
i would have made a stlk on them but it was getting late, and i figure i would have had the next morning to try and find them. but ended up having to call it a day due to my girlfriend being really sick. :bash:
-
Thats how you are suppose to do it if you are not sure dont pull the trigger
-
opening day my hunting buddy and my self looked at a buck for about a hour before we were both satisfied it was a 3 point only then did he take the shot and put it down it pays to make sure.
-
If you shoot a 2pt and leave it you are actually breaking more laws. I agree with andrew_12 gauge and would harvest the animal. If I was stopped I would explain what happened. I would rather be in that situation than leave and be reported for game wasting which is a huge crime and can get jail time. I would agree to make sure first but mistakes can be made.
-
Well, if you call yourself in, I'll say this; When the Warden showed up, he was pretty cool with the kid. Explained that he had to give him a ticket, but that he should explain the circumstances to the judge and he would probably get a break (which he did). Expensive lesson, but even the kid agrees that it was fair.
The reason they still give you a ticket, is so that people just don't go blasting away, then call a warden if they shoot the wrong thing, get a free pass, then keep on hunting...
-
Oh, and he got some instant credibility with the game dept here. They couldn't believe that a 21 year old called himself in.

This is a big issue, I have seen a few people do this. I had my son at one event. I was not happy with it the other gut had 2 kids with him. The dad shot a 2 pt. 30 yards in front of use, i was new to the area Twisp. I wasnt sure if it was a special permit or what later found out it wasnt or i would have went off on him in front of the whole canyon. People need to figure it out/ Dont shoot till you know what it is. I try to teach my son that but i hear some peaple cant figure it out. PISSES ME OFFFFF :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

On the bright side, somebody has to let us earn 10 points!
-
Sounds bad. People are always talking bad about archers... Stupid is stupid. No matter what you got in your hands.
-
Not only that, but if it is that questionable, why would you want to end your season on a gamble, or a barely legal animal. Let them grow.
Personally, I have not shot at legal animals due to doubts and have never regretted that decision.
But then again, I like hunting more than I like dragging an animal out of the woods.
That's why I Archery hunt with trad equipment.

I saw 7 bucks in 3 days of hunting in GMU 113, only 3 of which were legal and only 2 were shooters. tried to take aim at the biggest 1 only to find my scope has fogged internally! next day different gun, forkhorn, with eyeguards but couldn't tell you they would measure an inch so no aim was even tried with the rifle, only binos. 3rd day, another little forkhorn, didn't matter how much I stared he wouldn't grow a 3rd on either side.
-
Thats what happened to us last yr no matter how hard we looked they just would not grow a 3rd pt while we watched
-
always a good thing to do
-
We passed on one that we thought was legal. It was really foggy. It was and it got taken a short time later by a youngster. It was his first. We saw more 2 points than ever. Every group of deer we saw had a least 1 or 2 2 points. I bet I saw at lest 20 different 2 points and not one had a eyeguard. Good optics are an absolute must while mule deer hunting.
-
Years ago up Rock Creek in the Ump I come across I guy hooting and hollering. He yells to me "check out the size of this deer" so I wander over toward him and go "Hey buddy, that's no buck, that's a spike bull" and "Lucy .... you gonna have some splainin' to do when the man gets here" the look on the guys face was........ indescribable. Anyone else remember this? Back in like 86, maybe 87.

:yeah:
In 2002 (my second year hunting here in the SE), I passed on 2 bucks that I am pretty sure had 3rd points, but I just wasn't positive. Ate tag soup that year too. That year I replaced my rifle scope and bought a spotting scope..
-
Sometimes it goes the other way. Guys shoot elk with too many points. One guy started shooting the extra points off. Problem was it was sagebrush and there were plenty of onlookers.
-
I had this come up on Tuesday. I was in really thick stuff in a birch stand. I kicked a 4 point out of his bed at about 15 yards. It was so thick in there I could not see his antlers very quickly. By the time I confirmed the points I passed on the shot as it was to thick and he was moving straight away from me and towards some private property. I had seen a few spikes/forkies and thought it was probably one of them at first.
-
Yeah I was up in entiat these last couple of days got up high and put some friends on a real nice buck to bad they could only make it out to be a two point and i was just to the right of them and could only do the same. the deer jumped ran down the canyon lost sight of it and then bang bang. pretty sure that was not a legal buck
-
Everyone is missing a major point here.
This is one of the MAJOR strikes against antlers restrictions.
I'm personally tired of people worrying about if there are going to be big deer to shoot.
Anterls are great, but they are not the reason we hunt (I hope).
If it has come to that, we may as well stop hunting because we have already lost the argument.

There are two reasons I hunt. One is because I love to do it and the other is I want the meat. I believe antler resrictions are good because in most cases it puts age on deer. Age on deer (in most cases) makes for larger deer. Larger deer means more meat in the freezer. I pass on deer that will only go 100 pounds at the butcher to try and get one that goes 150 pounds at the butcher. You will rarley see that on a forked horn unless it's a really big forky. The extra meat means alot to me. Just my :twocents:
-
unfortunately most of us are just dealing with what the wonderful WDFW is giving us.
I have disagreed with the antler restrictions from the get-go.
In so many cases the experimental guidelines have failed. If we could give citation for failure the dept would be in trouble.
I can only imagine how many wasted kills there will be with the new true spike regs.
-
guess i shouldve said ive heard of guys thinking they saw 3 only to walk up and find only 2 points, and im in idaho now so no 3 point minimum in 99% of hunts anyway, and ive passed on several 2 points this year because id rather see them grow up
-
Screw legal before you shoot. Just be damned sure what you are shooting at is what you are wanting to kill. I don't care what it is. Whether it's a kid shooting a woman because he thinks it's a bear, a 170 mulie instead of a 200, a nanny instead of a billy, the wrong bighorn ram in a group, a 2 point mulie that lacked the 3rd point, etc. Most every issue I see has to do with pulling the trigger and not knowing what is in the crosshairs. If you do pull the trigger, own up to what you killed whether it's legal, illegal, or just smaller than you hoped. I can tell you since the 3 point regulations went into effect for mulies I have found no less than 10 mule deer 2 point bucks that were killed on the hope there was an extra point. It's one of the big reasons why I don't like the 3 pt or better rule. Ok, my rant is over. :bash:
-
I agree with Pope, be sure of your target or don't shoot.......................
Opening weekend up at Entiat, there was 2 point shot and killed right up the road from our camp and a couple of others in camp came acrossed a barly legal 3 pint that some one left to waste because they were not sure if it was a full 3 point. One of the kids taged it in camp so it would not go to waste. We measured out the eye gaurd and it hit the 1" mark, barely. Who ever shot it drapped it over a stump and left it. Along with the deer they droped ther hunting knofe s they picked up the knife also.
Today I saw 3, 2 points up around Bald Mt Road, could not grow a third point on any of them :bash: :bash: so we are with ut deer this year. Hopefully we can connect durring late season (west side).
-
There will be plenty of 3 pts out tomorrow.
