Title: Cousin's first deer ever - Winthrop
Post by: shanevg on October 28, 2009, 07:55:17 AM
Well, my family has been hunting the same spot in Winthrop for close to 20 years now.  This year we decided to invite our cousin along with us for second weekend of season.  All of us got up early and hiked to our spots to look for deer.  Adam didn't know the area well so we had him walk out the main road from camp (we were camped in behind a locked gate).  About 8 in the morning he spotted this buck below the road at about 200 yards and shot him.  He is a 5x4 with an eyeguard on the 5 point side.  He is close to, if not the biggest buck we have seen in our spot and Adam went and shot him on his second day of hunting there.  He is a great buck!  The last picture is showing how we get camp and our deer out.  It works really well.

Very nice deer. I would be very interested in one of those game carts you have attached to your bike in the photo?

Great buck Shane.  Congrat s to Adam.   Why is it that all the new guys shoot the big ones???  Very exciting for them yet frustrating for the rest of us.  A lot of hunting is being in the right place at the right time.  Thanks for posting

Looks like a Burley bike trailer stripped down. I had one until my 16 yr old decide to take it off jumps  with his mtn bike and broke the plastic attachment bracket.  :bash:

I don't know the brand of the bike trailer, we got it at REI.  It works really well, not a deer cart specifically but works just fine for one.  We found two containers that we can strap down on it and just load those containers up.

Hunting pressure is great once you camp behind the gate.  I never saw a single hunter either weekend that was not from our camp.  Can't beat that!

The buck was definitely starting to rut.  We did see one more about the same size but never got a shot at him.

Ya, I was back there a little longer than Shane, was there 6 days total, saw 3 hunters the entire time, and that was only when I hiked way down lower.  It was a fun time up there, if only I would have got a shot at that other buck!   :'(

This is a Burley trailer, we did not get it at REI because they did not carry this particular trailer at that time. Purchased at a bike store in down town Bellingham, had to order.

Great deer and what a lucky hunter. Love the idea of riding/hauling gear in behind the closed gate.
