Can anybody tell me if it would hurt my rifled barrel to shoot buckshot?
-
if its lead buckshot you should be fine i would not use the plated stuff i am sure it could mess it up.
-
Would not hurt it but you will probably get a crappy pattern as it will spin the wad out of the barrel and centripital force will whip the pellets away from center.
BTW buckshot is for people that are too lazy to sight their guns in unless your shots are 30 yards or less. Many states don't even allow its use for deer. Save it for coyotes. If you are worried about the cost of sabot slugs, switch to a smoothbarrel and shoot rifled slugs with a scope. They are accurate out to 100 yards or more with the right combo. :twocents:

Thanks,
I spent the last day of the regular season, Halloween, in my makeshift blind. I was sitting there after laying down a scent trail according to the directions on the bottle of estrus scent- put a little on your boots and the deer will follow your path to your blind- the only problem is the deer can't read! This gnarly old blacktail snuck up on me- grunted from 5 ft away and scared the bejesus outta me! I reached for my 870 propped up on the tree and missed that devil as he disappeared into the blackberry brush! Now my idea is to hunt the late opener with alternating slug and buckshot.

with all do respect oscar....why were you not checking behind you and what in the world was your gun doing propped up against a tree and not at the ready? :bdid:

You are right, of course :'(
My excuse is that I am new to hunting, last season being my first. I never got to hunt as a kid and my only hunting advise comes from TV and the internet. I love the outdoors and I am learning as I go. I got lucky killing a buck last year after hunting hard for a couple of weeks. :bash: I made every mistake until I sat at the edge of a field with the wind in my face and watched the apple trees across from me. :chuckle: During the off season I have studied as much as possible, but I am still making rookie mistakes like putting that scent directly on my boots.

well Oscar, welcome to the world of hunting, the day you stop learning then just hang your boots up and quit.

Every day of hunting is a learning experience. Unfortunately some lessons are harder to learn than others. There is still a bigger-than-life whitetail that haunts my dreams every day, and it was all on me. :bash: Damnit. Good luck in the late season!!

Why do it? Buckshot is only good out to 30 yards or so. If you can't hit a big game animal at 30 yards with a slug, get closer. A slug is a much better solution.

I dont know about the rifled barrel and all, but get Heavy Shot Buckshot. It is some lethal stuff and will extend your range.
Probably best not to shoot shot in a rifled barrel though.
