Post by: jstamp on November 07, 2009, 02:13:26 PM
just got a text from sidedrifter that said " game over, dropped the hammer this morning. nothing special..." i will try to get him to post the story and pics, but he doesn't post much, so either bigshooter or I will post the pics when they come in. Thanks to Duckfvr for the help.

I just got off the phone with Sidedrifter and he's pretty disgusted with the Desert Unit.  Said he saw lots of deer, but nothing big.  It doesn't sound like he's going to post a story or pics.  He said the buck he finally decided to end the season with will go about 145.

sounds like he is pretty disgusted with his whole season this year. First Alberta on a guided hunt and only sees 9 deer in over a week and no shooters, and comes home with a very expensive tag, then the desert and can't find a buck bigger then what he could shoot in general season. i don't blame him i would be pretty disgusted too. maybe once the bad taste of the season gets out of his mouth, he will post some pics at least, or give us the ok to do it. i saw a pic of the buck, and it truly is nothing special.

No offence, but if he is Disgusted, nothing special, not happy about it then why shoot? Man i hate it when guys kill an animal then give it no credit. If your not happy with the bucks your seeing, taking out one you think is too small just to fill the tag is not helping that unit, kill a doe if it was just for meat.. :twocents:
Did he have alot of knowledge of that unit before he drew the tag, or did he just put in for it because everyone else does and or was told that there are monsters out there behind every bush and a 170+ is a sure thing? Put in for tags that you know hold the animal you want, not just because..

Glad to hear he got a buck.  The desert sure isn't what it used to be.  Poaching is a very big problem.  There are some decent bucks out there, just not many worth waiting 5-10 years for.   :twocents:

He knows the unit and scouted it hard all summer and was there 3 days before season looking. he shot a buck because he wanted to and he had a tag and it's the last day of his hunt. He's happy with the buck, and told me that it's probably with prettiest buck he saw the whole week, and will  probably head mount it, he was just disgusted with the hunt. before you get on here and start blasting someone for what they did why don't you have some of the facts first.

Was not blasting anyone, just making a comment based on what you said he texted you and what was said based on a phone call, Now its a pretty deer that he will head mount, sure different than the first few posts? Why was he disgusted with the hunt? I know that unit/area well and there are some very nice bucks but they are not push overs, would not be my first choice for a buck of a lifetime, so im not aure what the expectations were.. :brew:

just got off the phone with sidedrifter, and he said he will post pics and the story hopefully tomorrow. he sounded a bit happier now that he's home. 10 days in Alberta, then 10 in the desert consecutive, both with high hopes. i could see how that would wear on a guy. he did say that he had a blast, but was a little frustrated with all the people and duck hunters, and seen over 100 bucks, just not the "one". i'll let him post the story, but he is sounding a bit better now.

I talked with sidedrifter last night he was just getting done scoring the buck.  It's a 5x5 with no eye guards.  Has an extra point coming off of both g3's that are about 4 inches long.  Scored 153.  As Jstamp said he was disgusted with the hunt but happy with the buck he killed.  I think the part he was most disgusted with, was all the duck hunters.  He said they were everywhere.  Made the hunt very frustrating.

Duck hunters kind of go with the territory in the Desert unit.  Selfish though to be frustrated by so many hunters enjoying one of Washington's best PUBLIC LAND waterfowl hunting areas.  There is quite a bit of that unit where there aren't duck hunters either.  There are lots of other permits to put in for where large numbers of hunters hunting other species is not an issue.

I don't know the guy, glad he got a deer and had a good hunt, but I get tired of the insinuation that everyone else's activities should be subordinate to a handful of lucky hunters who got drawn for a PUBLIC LAND opportunity lots of other hunters would love to have.  Hunters who want to have priority and the place all to themselves should pay to lease private land.  Other people go with the territory on public land.

140 is a respectable buck, not what I would have been gunnin' for in that unit though.  Sounds like he hunted hard and got a decent buck though.  Hopefully he will post soon.  I wanna see it.

I'm sure you would be glad to listen to hundreds of gun shots every day when you are deer hunting.  That makes deer hunting so enjoyable.

He never said anything about not letting duck hunters hunt during the deer season.  He just said that all the duck hunters made the hunt frustrating.

We all know that hunting PUBLIC LAND has its obstacles.  Thanks for the lecture.

I dont think anyone on here is lecturing about the obstacles with hunting on public land. Sure there is frustration but I for one would be envious of that tag, 100 bucks in 10 days i mean come on what do you want? Sure i get the frustration part, the only comment I felt was offensive was the comment " the buck was truly nothing special". Dude a doe is special, you took a life show it some respect!
