was up in the Winston Unit last night working. Some idiots think it's ok to block main roads off with vehicles, campers, and just about anything else you can think of to block roads. when the cops showed up because of a fight over the idiots blocking roads off. the idiots thought it was their god given right to block the road, because they were going to hunt up there today. I now know why i switched to archery hunting. and to think i was going to take the kid up there hunting this weekend to try to get him his first elk. not with that cluster f*^* up there. I wish they would shut and lock all of those gates and make everyone walk in there. It would be a whole lot better. >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
I saw the same thing this morning as I was heading out. Man I got soaked today. Nobody else was getting out of their rig so it was a good time to do some walking.
-
Its not only modern. Last year the same thing happened to me in the winston unit during the late archery season. 3 guys tried to block the road with their trucks they acted like they owned the place. It was just starting to get ugly before they decided to move.

Dude..I've had the same thing happen to me with Bowhunters. It's not the weapon of choice that makes idiots do this...it is the person themselves. I know exactly how you feel.
-
Seen it before. Also seen their tires get slashed. Kind of an expensive citizens' ticket. Guess they should have thought of that. Wasn't my problem but I chuckled a bit.
-
This is the reason I do not hunt lowland easy access units anymore. I got sick and tired of everyone thinking it's a race and competition to get to the elk. I see fewer elk where I hunt and have to walk a lot farther, but I see fewer idiots too.
-
That is a big reason why I will never hunt Winston again. Too many idiots driving the roads, blocking all pull outs and shooting at everything that moves, even during archery.
-
I had a few dumb a$$es do that t me in Vail (deer hunting), I just drove y jeep in the ditch to get around them and smiled as i whent around.
:hello:
-
Funny that you mentioned Vail. My daughter and I were up there a couple of weeks ago hunting grouse and came upon a mini van parked sideways on a narrow a spur road. It was a bitch turning my F350 Crew cab around. I honked the horn the entire time that I was doing my 40 point turn and did a big burn out in the mud as we left. If I had my saw I probably would have fell a snag over the road. I have 0 patience for idiots like that.
-
P bear never fall one across the road, fall it with the road that way they have to chunck the whole damn tree out of the road. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Thanks for the tip, I'm sure it will come in handy!
-
I have to admit, I my self have blocked off a dead end road my self. When I do, i park in an area closer to the end of the road, not 3 miles of road, and leave plenty of room for peple to turn around in.
This year i just pulled ff the road, because we have not see any one in the area we hunt in a few years. Well this F&&ker in a yota passes my jeep and drives on. He sees we are hunting the area, there are 3 of us in a less then 1/4 mile area. I had my daughter waling the road towards the end, they passed up her on the road, speed up to the end of the road and jumped out and speed walked to the ravine on the end of the road >:(
This really pissed her of for it was one of the ravines we were watching.
So just t be a dick, i walked around them and hunted the finger ridges below them. :ass:
-
Not to be a jerk but they had every right to drive around you. You have no right to block any road or trail just because you want to hunt it alone. My cousin works for a certain timber co in Mason county has parked his grader, blocked in folks who block the roads, had the oiler pick him up and left them blocked in for the night. Keep in mind they are not your roads to block or do with as you please!

It did not piss me off that they drove through ( i was parked on the side of th eroad, not blocking), it was the fact they sped up and drove past my daughter to beat her to the end of the road, that was only 80 yards in front of her, just to be at the ravine first. She was walking slow, looking for deer in th esurounding area ,as she waled to the ravine.
This is a very small area in the Entiat unit, and i mean small area.
-
I had a couple *censored*bags block off a road heading down into a unit I'd been scouting all summer on opening morning of elk season a few years ago. . . They were there blocking it off a good hour before daylight. They refused to let me around, insisting they had a bunch of guys in there. I told them I wanted to go in there too regardless, and they still wouldn't let me pass.
I headed around to the other side, hiked in a half mile or so on a dug-up road and walked all through the unit making all the noise I could before the sun came up, didn't hear anything take off, but I was going to make sure if there was anything alive in the area it'd be running to the next county. Served those *censored*s right. I am happy and fairly surprised I didn't get shot at!
-
I had that happen to me in Toutle permit archery season several years ago. Went into a spot in the morning and hunted till about noon, headed back out to get to camp and some guy had the narrow road blocked, only way out. He said he was watching a deer and that I would have to wait. I got out and walked up to his door and he pulled out a revolver saying I would have to wait.
-
Reason # 4321 to carry a side arm while in the woods, hunting or not!!
-
WOW ! it did not take long for this thread to start ! :yike: opening day of elk season and the Idiots are out., I am planning on heading to unit for late archery and thought about driving down this weekend just to watch the madhouse, guess I can save the fuel. :hunt2: :4w: :mgun:
-
I feel that Wey co should just close the gates all hunting season long except for the weekends. They do this in early archery and it works great. I feel this separates a lot of hunters and although may be a little more work, the elk are a lot less spooked and you see a lot less people and idiots. There would be no need to have the gates closed or people to block off roads if people wouldn't drive down dead end spurs, get out of your rig and use those boots more. There is plenty of state land if you want to road hunt. Last year they did designate "walk in only" areas which is a step in the right direction in my opinion. Wey co land west of I-5 has a "dot" system that would be easy to adopt in the winston but I doubt people would use it. A closed gate is a beautiful thing!
When we have young hunters with us, lets remember they are watching and learning from are action. Even if people are idiots, treat them with the same hunter ethics that you would like those idiots to treat you with. If we stoop down to their level that makes us no better!
-
I'v been on both sides of the fence. one time a group of guys had the road blocked on opening day not letting any one by. There was was about tree miles of road and a few cuts passed them. THATS B.S.
-
Gate them ALL ! :twocents: mainline open ONLY. Tickets for guys that drive in closed areas. The hunting would only get better. :twocents:
-
I would be happy with them all locked up as well, I have no problems hiking in and out.
-

:yeah:
I have also been to the upper end of Winston during late archery and had the DINGDONGS blocking the road. These are the same type of low life scum suckers that steal peoples elk as they are full of greed and selfishness. What a bunch of crap snackers.
-
I was hunting this unit once and parked my truck wear someone could get around if they really wanted to about 80 yards from the landing. there was a good turn around right behind my truck. I sat there and watched some guy get out and lock his hubs and then he drove around my truck. he came up to the landing and sat there with his truck running and lights on glassing out his window. It was not even light yet. He glassed for 5 or 10 minutes then drove back out. I don't own that spot of the woods, but what happend to respecting other hunters.
-
That, my friend, is the root of all this hassle. No respect for our fellow sportsmen and less respect for the sport.
It is all about "getting", not about how this success was achieved.
How silly the story would sound if one of these guys told the truth about how he "hunted" from the seat of his truck, saw some elk, blocked the road so nobody else would see them, walked down the road and opened fire....you get my point.
I wish the gates would stay locked, like it is for early archery (most WH lands)
I wont hunt modern because I like to hunt for animals, not a place to park.
The reason they open the gates for modern season is so that all the trucks arent blocking the road at gates.
The reason I archery hunt is because I like to, and I know there are idiots in all user groups, but 1% of a smaller number is still a smaller number....
-
jstamp, what road were they blocking? The 1900? Every year it gets worse there. That is why I was supposed to be, and my brother and our buddy are camped in the high country again. No more dealing with the IDIOTS down low.

I agree with your first comment 100% but not sure I follow the other comments. I have seen this problem with all user groups although it does not effect me anymore because of where I hunt. The reason most of us hunt is because we like to, doesn't matter what eachothers choice of weapon is. I have hunted with both gun and bow . No disrespect but but I don't think I understood exactly what you meant. Again like I have said before..and you as well...It is not the weapon of choice but the idiots themselves and to tell you the truth I don't think it will get any better unless they do close the roads. Just my :twocents:

I can tell you that if I ran into someone who blocked a public road and was a jerk about it, we'd be rolling in the gravel.
-

the 220 on the mossyrock end off of longbell rd
-
as of right now, i am aware of at least 5 people busted for poaching/trespassing/felon in possession of a firearm and just about any other game violation you could think of, busted in the mossyrock/winston units since noon today. i did hear that they hooked a few this morning in the toledo area as well. and the calls are still coming in from what i hear. wildlife officers just finished wrapping up a call in the morton area, where a guy shot 2 bulls and put his 08 and 09 tags on them, and didn't notch either one. apparently he shot the bulls on private property in front of some other white :chuckle: people. it just goes to show you that some people deserve to be caught. what an idiot. not to mention 2 less legal bulls in the unit.
-
Jstamp. My old man is camped somewhere down there. I think he said they were camped somewhere past the 120. They've been hunting down there for years now. This is part of the reason I don't hunt down there anymore. To many idiot's. I'm sure they are running into the same thing. Maybe next year he will finally make the transition to muzzleloader. By the way did you hear of any animals hitting the ground?
-
i have seen a few come through today, but not too many. i'll be back up in the area tonight again working, so i'll let ya know
-
I have never encountered that situatuion and I hope I never have to. I do like the honking the horn the whole time of the turn around though. Definately sounds like a good time to fire up the saw and cut firewood too.
-
There is a reason, people call hunting the Winston, "Combat Hunting" :bdid:
-
I know of a guy who had one down this morning and
by the time he got to him someone already had him opened up
and a tag on him. It's just a zoo. Plain and simple.

I was not critisizing weapons choice, I was merely stating the difference between hunting when there are 76,000 hunters and 7,600 idiots versus 13,000 hunters and 1,300 idiots. meaning there are still idiots in all user groups, just less means less, with a similar percentage.

i have seen it happen in the winston.using equiptment to block state land.awesome hunting winston is like fishing blue creek.it can produce , but its not worth the bs :twocents:

had that happen to me in the randle unit. a big group but up a tent blocking the whole road. i ran into a game warden about an hour later told him about it, he had me show him where it was. i watched as he hooked a rope around the tent tied it to his bumper then drove off. scattered stuff everywhere then gave them a ticket for littering. was funny to watch there faces as he did that. : :chuckle:

I understand the frustration. But you guy that want all the gates locked must not have any elderly or crippled family memebers.
How are they supposed to get out and try to hunt a bit?
Hell my Dads 78 years old.He still loves to get out and try for a deer or elk.Or even just drive around and reminise about the old days.Hell,he logged a lot of that stuff in the 50s and 60s.Killed a lot of dear and elk in there too.
I have a nephew thats confined to a wheelchair.Hows he supposed to even see a critter if he cant be driven around in a vehicle.Guess he'll have to chain up and go around the gates.Ya.right.
Hope you guys never get old or stoved up.cause people that think like you do will cause you to put away your weapons and sit in your recliner and remember the good ole days when you used to be able to get around and hunt a bit.
Lets piss and moan about how bad an area is.But even knowing that,go in and hunt it expecting something else.It would be nice if everybody was a better person. And it wasnt so crazy. But thats not the case.
If you want seclusion.Go where its secluded.
Theres bettter alternatives.

What is the better alternative? People do not follow the rules with game wardens and "eyes in the woods" running all over. The hunting is way better when the gates are shut. There are special permits for disabled hunters and they have special draw permits for 65 and older hunters. If that isn't enough, there is thousands of acres of state land that you can drive all over if you so please.
-
Lock the gates year round and have special permit seasons for the elderly and disabled, pretty simple. Unfortunately some of those disabled permits are an invitation to poaching. I saw it first hand over by the steam plant where one guy had a permit and he had 4 other young guys, all with rifles, driving behind the gate. they came out with 3 bulls on one special permit.
-
I'll take the 3 bulls and 4 guys over the 100 when there is 1500 guys shoved into a little space.
-
The last time I hunted that unit was 2004, my wife was getting ready to deploy to Iraq, so we thought we would just do modern firearm for her. Walked in on a main road line and we were kind of down below a hill line on the road, and some idiot started shooting across the road over the tops of our heads. I took my orange hat off and threw it up in the air for him to see and the only thing that happened was three more rounds over the top of out heads. I just crawled up and got into a good rest position with the 300. And yelled some profanities and when they looked my way. They started pointing and yelling elk, I looked across the road and they were at least 400 yards from me and they were about 800-900 yards from those idiots. I crawled down the one embankment crawled up the other one, the elk were just standing in the open, I scoped the two bulls that were there, seen no blood on them. I shot the smaller one, by this time these two clowns were coming onto the road. We walked over to the elk there was one shot in it. They just looked at me, I said take it, and next time watch where the hell you are shooting. Turned around walked back got the wife and got the Heck out of there. NEVER AGAIN for me

both sides are right. The disabled, elderly should have a permit allowing them to drive in with ONE OTHER body. Kids should have a raffle for said permits. Just cause ur a fat ass shouldn't mean u get a permit either. It should noo *censored* be prostetics (sp?) or a inability to move freely. Not cause of hearing loss, or a lopped off finger. The rest should be walk in only. Screw the rd hunters. Rd hunt by walking, biking. Not by driving 30+ and shooting from the door jam! >:(
I'm not even a rifle guy, and my blood is boiling just thinkin about the d bags!
-
In response to the handicap problem, I know of one area that has a locked gate, during season it is opened for handicapped hunters ONLY, anybody without a handicap permit behind a posted sign will be ticketed. I suspect there are other such areas and support this practice.
fortunately handicapped hunters are a minority and deserve special consideration.
The majority of hunting areas like the winston unit would be best served by closing every road that is not the mainline, with one or two such roads that are handicap access ONLY.
I don't think laziness and ignorance is considered a handicap.
-
I don't think laziness and ignorance is considered a handicap.
Ummmmmm think again! :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
It's everywhere, even out of State, The only thing I hate worse than Road Blockers is the Poachers who drive into walk in only Areas. >:(
-
I wish they would shut and lock all of those gates and make everyone walk in there. It would be a whole lot better.
:yeah: It would help deer populations as well.

Road blockers are nothing, I've seen them removed the damn gate. :bash:

with whatever they have handy, winch, bullets, dynamite..... :o
-
What I do not understand is, it seems just about everyone has a phone that can take pictures and/or a camera with them. Why not take pictures of these idiots rigs that are blocking the roads and access points. Offer this info to the game warden or sheriff and post them so everyone can see who these idiots are!
-
should have seen Margret I have one of the 18 permits for that unit, every gate was open going in off 505 and from the winston side. Vehicles around every corner. This hunt is not what I had expected, nobody manning gates or checking game. Heard there where some under covers in there, but who knows. :dunno:
-
And just because your a logger and have a key to the locked gates doesn't mean you should open the gate to let yourself and your buddy in then lock the gate behind you and make everyone else walk in.
If you going behind the gate to work then you should not have a "Hunting Rifle" with you either. :twocents:
-
If you going behind the gate to work then you should not have a "Hunting Rifle" with you either.
This i do not agree with.
Some jobs have perks, and this is one of them, and no, I am not a logger or know any.

Oh..Ouch. I don't agree with that comment. When you leave the landing you are off work. Like gasman said....it's one of the perks to a hard job. And no I am not a logger.
-
I know that there are some timber companies that really frown on this.In fact the big one around has told guys I know,in the past that it could cost them their job.Its not a perk unless the landowner says it is.
Their perk is having a job.Not abusing it by thinking they have the perk of hunting behind a licked gate. When the sign says no motorized vehicle access. It means just that. For everybody.
-
:yeah:
-
when i was a little kiddo my dad drove to the end of a landing where some loggers were BSing (after work) thought he would ask about the game in the area. To my suprise they said your kids buck is right there -------> 0_0 what i said??? smoke outta the truck and there is a forkie about 200yrds away. took a nice rest and blam... those were real woods men passing small ones and helping young ones. by the way they all had rifles in there truck and all hunters legally hunting after work......i have yet to meet a logger who would shut down the whole operation to shoot and gut a buck for himself. On the other hand have seen them shut down for a man to feed his family and i mean really hungry ppl they left it open till dark cause they hunt too and were good ppl just my :twocents:
-
There is nothing wrong with legally hunting, I think the point that is being made if it is a closed gate area everyone should have to walk or ride a bike in.
