I was hunting Elk last Thursday evening when this buck ran across a logging road in front of me. I was able to tell he was a decent buck and was kicking myself that there was two more days left until the late season started. Well Saturday morning I set out to see if I could see him again not expecting to. I drove up the mountain to a spot above where I had seen him cross the road. I decided to try rattling to see if I could stir something up. I have only tried to rattle a few times with no luck. I rattled for a few minutes and blew twice on my grunt tube. Just as I reached over to pick up my antlers again he jumped out of the brush and pranced around looking for someones ass to kick. He saw me and jumped behind some brush at about 45 yards. I grunted two more times and he came out from behind the brush and I let him have it. He ran off and I listened to see if I could here him go down, but to be honest, my heart was beating so loud that I couldn't here. I sat for a few minutes then walked over to where he was standing and the ground was sprayed with lung blood. I followed the blood trail through the thick brush and found him piled up under a tree. He is not the biggest buck I have ever shot, but rattling him in was about the most exciting experience I have had hunting. I can only imagine what it would be like to call in an Elk, but this will do for now.

Nice job. I will be heading to Minnesota for a week for my first whitetail hunt. I plan on doing some rattling also.
-
Congratulations.....nice buck.

I would drop him in a heartbeat too. Nice to hear that the rattling has worked. I have tried it on Whitetails for the last 4 years with no luck. Not making it over for the late hunt, but my ol man has been out everyday and has not seen much. Says they do not seem to be rutting much?

Ya he wasn't swelled up or smelly so I must have just caught him having a bad day or he was just curious what that sound was. He probably had never heard a sick grunt and bad rattling before. :)

UHOH -- Your hooked now, rattling and grunting is one of the best times of the year. Nothing like having the animal come running to you. I will be over in Eastern Washington next weekend and hope to rattle some in.

Right on! Cool story, and nice buck!

Congrats on rattling in your 1st buck and shooting it. I have rattled in a few while bowhunting but haven't been able to close the deal.

Nothing more exciting than a bounding buck coming to antlers!! Nice job! One more hunter who will never leave home without a set of antlers stapped to his pack.
