I did have my opportunity to fill my tag but I missed my shot. Just wanted to get a felling of what people thought. By the way the calf that was shot was a bull which would probably be next years spike.

or if there was a heard of elk the others would fend for the calf so i would shoot the cow then

I would blast it....Oh wait I did cause I'm the guy Team Baze is talking about. :)Congrats. You won't get any judgement out of me on shooting a calf with a special permit. I'm not exactly going to say I agree with the way WDFW manages our game but they know when they give those antlerless permits that a certain percentage of them will likely be bull calfs. I would prefer to shoot a mature cow (more meat) but in the end, I would shoot a calf.

Something needs to be clarified. Yes it was a calf,but probably not what you're thinking. This calf was at least 1/2 the size of the cow I shot (my brother shot the calf). It was probably 250+ lbs on the hoof.
Shooting an elk calf thats bigger than 95% of the deer that get tagged every year is a far cry from shooting a fawn thats the size of a cocker spaniel.

My first big game animal was a calf on a west bar anterless hunt when I was 12. The year prior, a friend had shot a cow and its calf stuck around to watch the carnage. So his son (who also had a tag) shot the calf. After eating both side by side, I had strict instructions to shoot a calf when I drew the following year. Years later I had other friends who shot a cow and her calf - they wound up eating all the calf first.
I recently passed on a cow to shoot its calf. You can cut the backstaps (let alone the tenderloin) with a fork. It's great. If it doesn't have horns, I'd rather get the best meat I can, even if I have less of it. A fawn is just too small to waste a tag on.

So would you rather have a guy that doesn't particularly care for venison,throw 80lbs of meat in the freezer and throw it away 2 years from now because it wasn't eaten?

If you have an antlerless tag and want to shoot a fawn,why would that be wrong? The WDFW gives out antlerless tags for a reason.
I think its funny that so many think its "wrong" to shoot a calf/fawn. Is it really more wrong to smoke a 6 month old elk as opposed to a 6 year old elk?

I would still happily shoot an elk calf. The last one I shot, I thought there were an adult cow, a yearling and a calf - I shot the "yearling", turned out it was a big calf. 76lbs of absolutely orgasmic eats.

antlerless permits are issued for a reason, harvestable numbers are deemed valid.
guess its up to the permit holder on what to harvest. freedom of choice is one of the best things about livin in the USA.
