So, i've been bowhunt'n for about a year now, and its a Martin Firecat set at 60lb draw. Now, i can pull that back easy and all but i was wondering if i set it down to 55 would that lessen the over kill on small game? Like rabbits and rock chucks? Also, i shoot 125 grain tips, would i need to bump down to 100 grains in order to keep making 40-50yd shots? Thanks to anyone who answers!

Leave your bow alone and set where it's at, the best part of hunting small game is preparation for big game. Also, no such thing as overkill, critters only get a certain amount of dead. :twocents:

60 lb is light enough. Keep shooting what you are shooting what ever the game size.
I shoot 60lbs and 100 grain Muzzy MX3 for everything from Elk, to pheasant.

Okay but what if i take off my side mounted quiver and start using a waist or shoulder one though? Does that effect how your bow shoots at all?

I't can, take it off and check, i took mine off and it did not change at all, but every bow and person are different..

I shoot a side quiver, I had it one on my bow, did not like all that there in front of me, when I removed the quiver and bought my side one it did not change anything on the bow, but like said take it off and try it.

Leave your bow alone, Theres no over kill using a bow you cant have to much, but you can have to little. What ever the setup is if it shoots straight then great.... And for the quiver it most likely aint gonna change your shooting on or off the arrow is still gonna fly the same the Bow itself might have a little less Vibration is all.

shooting small game is great practice for the big stuff. i would leave it alone and get all the practice shooting as if you were big game hunting. however if you want to hunt big game at 55lbs then go ahead and lower it where you want it.

my bow is set at 70lbs and that is where it is staying

Bows are set up to have adjustable draw weight. But each bow has a specific draw weight it will shoot best with with your draw length and arrow setup. If your setup is sweet shooting and forgiving, changing drawweight may be a bad idea. If your still tuning your equipment, might as well give it a try. My advice though, once its shooting good dont mess with it. If your worried about meat or arrow loss with small game, take head shots to prevent meat loss. Arrows? 55 or 60 wont make a bit of difference.

The max this bows draw weight is 60 and the lowest is i 45. I had it tuned in the beginning at 55 and it was great, then i switched to 60 and it's not so great but i thought that was just the different type of tips i was shooting. And the arrows are Gold Tip Expedition Hunter 3555. Got a whisker bisquit rest and the sight is a nice trophy ridge 3 point, but the pins all go up from the base, so when its dark you can't tell where they are.. Kinda sucks.. Thinking bout selling it and getting one where the pins are mounted on the side.

like said you can leave it alone makes for great practice just add a judo or adder behind your field point and lett her eat

I hear you on the Trophy ridge sight, I shot one for a couple years and noticed that I didn't care for the way the pins covered the target at longer distances especially. I noticed a big difference after switching to side mounted pins.

Another problem with some sights these days are the size of the pins, I prefer a small pin because a larger dot will cover up targets at far distances and makes me less precise, archery is a lot of personal preference and what makes you comfortable though. I'd say hunt with the same setup for everything because you take away the variable. It is proven that shot placement trumps all other factors, and therefore you should shoot what you're most comfortable shooting and meets regulations.

The best thing about small game is it is practice for large game.
I shoot trad equipment (recurve, no sights,off the shelf..etc.) and took my bow mounted quiver off of one of my bows and it DID affect my shooting. I use a side quiver now...
Also if the bow is tuned any changes will affect point of impact, so practice with it until you can get consistant arrow flight and if you want to use a lighter bow for small game, get a different bow....
I have 3 different bows I hunt with, 55#,60#,70# and several others I play with 40#-50#, archery is fun :archery_smiley:
