I'm getting ready for the upcoming Cow Elk season starting on the 19th in the Margaret unit. WA fish & game sent out a letter saying the 2500 road access point from 504 was now private and trespassing not allowed.
Does anyone know what gates will be open for access? (possibly a hunter coming back with a bull tag that was up there in the last week or so?) I'm also looking for any "intel" on the area. ;)
Please PM me or email me at cornhuskid@yahoo.com.
Thank you in advance,

I thought that was mostly Weyerhauser land and they didn't open the gates for anyone.... Maybe they open them for rifle, they didn't when I had my archery tag up there. It shouldn't be too hard to find one close to a gate.
Good luck.
I don't know the road number but there is a gate to the north right after crossing a high bridge that curves to the left as you go over it on your way toward the last interpretive center (Johnston Ridge?).

How much scouting have you done? Did you just put in for the tag not knowing the erea?
You should be able to walk in from any of the gates and find a cow. I don't know if you know the erea. If you have been in then I could give you some pointers but I don't know the road numbers ect.

Hi,
We took a Cow Elk up there two years ago on the west side of Margaret. At that time we were able to drive in through the 2500 gate which gave us access to the whole unit. I don't mind the walking in and shooting, it's the carrying out that's a PITA!
:chuckle:
I called the access hotline and did not get any helpful info either...
Thanks!

I believe the 2500 road is the road granted to the company that bought the high lakes area, can not be 100% sure though.
There are other roads to get into the area, you just may have to hike in from the gate.

I wonder why the 2500 road... that's clear to the west. Isn't there a road at the east side of the unit (right before the observitory) that would be a heck of a lot closer?

My thoughts exactly!!! Maybe it's to allow more roads to hunt as they are on the way to their land?

As long as they aren't buying all the entrance roads... Had that situation in Nebraska where several of the state BLM lands were "locked" by private land all around them. Could not access without trespassing... Probably not the case, just think it's a very strange choice.

it would be pretty easy to try to drive in the day before and see if its open and where.once you cross the hoffstadt bridge start trying gates and just keep driving up hwy 504. :twocents:good luck

I believe you would be able to take the 1900 in and then head back into the Margaret. long drive but it should provide access. let me know if I am wrong..... :dunno:
