I noticed that 667 was open this year for late muzzle and I have a friend who has never taken a deer who lives out by Elk Plain we were thinking of doing some day hunts into the unit.Neither of us have ever been there and would like some help. This is the Vail tree farm right? Is there a main gate you have to go through if so where is it?What is the main access points?Once in the area are there closed roads to hike behind? As you can see im totally in need of some help!Any info would be appr.
Thanks in advance Kram

They plan on opening the main gate for the thanksgiving weekend which is rare. They were going to last year for archery but idiots screwed that up. Should be a good muzzleloader deer hunt with far far fewer people than rifle.
-
seems like i read something about that in the revisions to the hunting regs the other day i would go check on the web site. maybe i am wrong but it seems to ring a bell.
-
-If theres snow up high like on the 40line or 42 get up there, you will see 50+ deer a day!
-
must not be hunting near the release site...I dont see 50 deer a year down there...maybe not 25 a year :dunno:
i must be going to the wrong part of the 667 :'(
-
-Up high in the snow around thanksgiving is awesome, they dont open the gates after late buck too often but when they do, the archery or muzzle if its open will have the best blacktail hunt they ever had, The Big Bucks will still be hard to get though!
-
where the hell is up high in 667...lol :P
-
-Im sure you can look up the valley and figure that out, its the cuts that are all white right now, well 2 days ago anywayz :P
-
jeez...all I know to do is sit on chucks back porch and wait for midnight with my spot light...lol
really never have tried to get high there...whats the best way in?? through vail or what?
-
-haha that would probably work too! :chuckle:
-
-Im sure vail will be the only way in if its open thanksgiving. A few years back we went up late archery deer and it was insane, seriosly deer around almost every corner! Just road hunt spot and stalk, some of the steep canyons off the 42 is were id go! Make sure you have a cat tag too cause your going too see them up there!

hey skookumhntr thanks for the info. One guestion for ya where can I p/u maps of the area namely showing roads.
-
Best maps are aerial photos. Use google earth or Go here. Zoom to a close scale and print. Cut and tape them together.

I checked out this post because I am interested in maybe checking it out (667) for late archery (overlap), and am impressed by the response.
The "usual" guys must be hunting..........
one of the few times a question like this was answered with encouragement, and a comment that was an obvious joke about poaching was not taken seriously and therefore not changing this post into a name calling pissing match.
I commend you and look forward to more posts in a similar vein, those who responded are the kind of sportsmen I look forward to sharing the woods with.
ANYHOW, after I got that off my chest, I want to ask,
#1, Is the gate open only the weekend after Thanksgiving?
#2, What is the phone # to find out?
#3, What about the 1000 mainline up in the Bald Hills, is that gate open?
#4, Anybody see any Elk?
-
Bad news guys. Just called the hotline and the Thanksgiving gate opening has been cancelled. No info other than that. Call 1-866-636-6531 to hear it for yourself. 667 will still be open just no drive in Vail access. Still lots of good walk in for muzzleloader and bow though.
-
Thank you for the #
-
-Like I said its very rare that the gates are open after Late Buck and its BS becouse its taking away a awesome hunt for the late guys up in the snow, but I would keep calling the hotline to see if anything changes. You can get weyerhauser maps at sunbirds I thought but Im not sure how detailed they are, Im up there a ton so I know the area pretty well but I still get lost once in awhile so a map might be handy, lol! Logging can really change the scenery and get you screwed up!!

1000 road is locked but it has been open during the week for access to the gravel pit. Closes at irregular times. Not open to the public. Fennel Road gate was open throughout Elk season. >:( Don't know why but several road hunters used it, They didn't know that they shouldn't. Can you say dumb s**ts? :bash: Are you talking late archery elk or deer?

I am after both deer and Elk, spending Thanksgiving weekend in Winston, but after that .....Depends....
I am spending Thanksgiving Day at the in-laws and they live up near Cabelas, and have a nice 4X4 eating their pear and apple trees. I just wish I knew when he was gonna show up......
