Title: Got this wabbit... where are his friends?
Post by: johng on November 17, 2009, 07:23:21 PM

Howdy all,

This rabbit was the first thing I ever bagged out in the woods besides a fish.   :)

Got him with my SKS.... what I am wondering is where the heck are his relatives?  Do guys just typically bag rabbit when they are out deer hunting or scouting for something else?  Or do people actually go "rabbit hunting"?

It was dang tasty.. BBQ'ed em!

 :camp:

Cheers,

John

i'd love to be able to take the .22 for a walk, unfortunately out here on the coast i don't think there's much in the way of rabbits, too wet i think.

over towards my parents house in lacey, there's a lot more of them.  they seem to be somewhat solitary but where you find one, you'll usually see more.  too bad that all the places i know they live are in city limits :bash:

Down here near Vancouver they are everywhere.  I usually see them out in the open early morning and late evening.  My tactic is to move really fast down old logging roads, almost at a jog.  Not trying to be quite at all.  They either get confused or curious and stand up or stand still.  I noticed I saw a lot of rabbits when I was trying to beat nightfall out of the woods.  Sometimes they would run right out in front of me and when they do run off the edge of the road they just get off the edge and then stop.  Got lots this way.  This is also my tactic for pheasants and grouse without dogs. :dunno:

I look really dumb in this picture because the sun was really bright in my eyes.   :chuckle:

Around here they used to just take trucks, have a couple guys in back with guns(most likely loaded) drive up a certain couple of roads like bats out of hell, and suddenly around a corner would be about a dozen rabbits staring back out of em. Reason for so many quick guns around here. Jeez, went hunting with some of those guys before, they see something its heads gone by the time your bringing your rifle to your shoulder, no joke. Okay, maybe a little exagerated, but back in the day, funnnnnnn stuff

Kain, where do you hunt?  I'm also in Vancouver and am looking for a place to hunt cottontails.

Last year, they were all over my neighborhood (too bad I can't hunt from my front porch!).  We'd see them every day.  This year, I see them hopping about maybe one a week.  The population seems way down in my area.

Rabbits live in colonies or warrens (this applies to eastern cottontails) but that said they are fairly anti social creatures.  We have a colony at my house this year we have about 5 or 6 rabbits total with one lost to the road already.  They tend to prefer areas with either blackberries or dense brush near more open fields for grazing.  Rabbits love clover if you want to drop some seed to encourage them clover is always welcome.  Our group also eats in our orchard along with the deer on fallen apples and pears.  The bunnies are most active right before and at dawn and dusk.....if you find a colony you can observe you will find they are pretty consistent in there patterns.  Oh and bunnies fight in a very nasty way and screech and scream also they have lousy survival rates this is why they can breed so frequently.

So if you found one it is likely there are more in the same area try really early or just after dark......

We had a beagle until 07 and I hunted with him out in the sagebrush country.  I'll still go out on a sunny day during the winter and shoot a few with the .17 as they some out and sun themselves.  Move slow and use the binos alot.  Pretty tasty critter.

We use to have rabbits come in the yard all the time where we were renting.  Use to sit out there with my bow.
