Whats everyone shoot for varmits? I shoot a .223 encore, and a 17 hmr, also have had real good luck with my 870 and #4 buck JB
-
CZ in .223
-
Just depends on what day it is. Mainly a 7mm STW, but I also use a 22-250, 223's, or a 243.
-
Savage 243 85 grain.
-
7mm but I a want to get a 22-250
-
Savage Model 111 , 22-250 sierre 55gr or same gun with the .270 barrel and sierre 90gr.
Or Stevens 7-08 with what ever I have loaded at the time .
slenk
-
I have a Tikka .223 varminter and a remington .17. I had troubles deciding between a 22-250 or the .223 when I bought the Tikka, but my dad has a model 77 22-250 I can use if I ever want to shoot one.
-
Winchester pre 64 mod 70 .243 still trying with loads.
-
How you like your Tikka? I was thinking of getting rid of my 44mag Redhawk and getting one.
-
I shoot a thompson center encore heavy barrel in .223. That thing is a tack driver.
-
Tikka .243 and AR15 .223
-
Ruger M77 220 swift, 55gr sierra or if I'm saving hides 60gr hornaday.
-
Winchester .270 :)
really reaches out there and nows how to turn em circles. You laugh but it'll flat put a hurting to any coyote it lays its sights on up to about 500yrds no problem. Never shot anything that small farther than that.
-
I forgot that I also have a Ruger 10/22 for shooting dirt rats at closer ranges and with cheap ammo.
-
Ruger #1 22-250. 50 grain Hornady V-max boat tail. Topped with a Nikon Monarch 5-20 X44. I just got it sighted in. Hopefully get to do some long range shooting at some yotes this winter.
-
since we are on this thread i wanted to let everyone now that i am trying to trade both my .410 and my 10/22 for a 22-250 or a .223. please let me know if anyone is interested.......AJ
-
What kinda .410?
-
tika 22-250, savage .204, ar15, bow
by far the tika is the way to go but the ar is hard to beat
-
I shoot a 22 Hornet a little spendy but very effective
-
Remington 700 LH VS .223 using 52 grn SMK's, sub 1/4 MOA at 100 yards.
Also borrow my Wife's .243 Youth Model firing 90 grn Nosler BT's. Short and fast handling.
-
DPMS AR-15...204
-
I shoot a model 70 in .243 with a heavy barrel. 55gr nosler balistic tip with H380. Shoots three shot groups a dime can cover.
-
Bow
10/22 mostly federal bricks of 550
220 swift 52 gr. HPBT
6mm 75 gr.HP
257 WBY 75 gr. HP
-
i'd like to pick up a .223 or 22 hornet for coyote shooting. been looking at the CZ and savage rifles. don't like tupperware stocks.
-
I would advise the 223 over the hornet because my son has a hard time finding cartridges for his hornet at times. The 223 will outperform the hornet by quite a bit too.
-
i am itching to get my 22-250 heavy barrel dialed in on my encore. it will have a nikon buckmasters 4.5-14 scope on it. not sure what boolits yet.
:dunno:

+1
I absolutely love the .223 round. It's very accurate, fun to shoot, has very mild recoil (you can watch the bullet hit the target), ammo/reloading is inexpensive, is available in all types of actions, and will do the job out to 300 yards or so.
-
22mag and a 243 this year
-
204 ruger, 22 mag and 270 for big cats :mgun:
-
Hey xXx, what scope is that?
.250 Savage is my go to gun for varmints, or whatever I can grab first.
-
Kimber 22-250, Mossberg 835 22" barrel
-
jackelope.....I am not sure if they are still available but I shot a lot of different bullets in my 220 swift and finally settled on the Speer 52 Grain HPBT Match.
I am not near as good of benchrest shooter as those who taught me and I could get a 5/8 group with those bullets. I also shot dozens of coyotes with them and hundreds of squirels. They seemed like an all around good bullet. I tried many other bullets but always went back to the 52 gr HPBT. :twocents:
-
thanks Dale.
i'm a factory ammo guy, not a reloader so i'll look around and see what i can find. most of my guns shoot better than i do.
-
sorry man....I wrongly assumed you were a reloader....I can't help much on the factory ammo.... :dunno:
-
i'ver never had any problems with shjooting factory ammo. i usually buy 2-3 different types and see which one shoots best and stick with that one. always find 1 that shoots really well.
-
I also shot dozens of coyotes with them and hundreds of squirels.
LMAO, you are shooting squirels with a 3800fps round? :lol4
-
LMAO (don't know what that means) :dunno:
You must have looked up the ballistics, yes I am shooting in between 3750 to 3800. I don't load it to the max load, too hard on barrels if you shoot a lot.
Ground Squirrels, Prairie Dogs, Rock Chucks, Coyotes......all very dead. This is varmint shooting pretty close to the max. The 204 is faster but doesn't have as much bullet. :dunno:
I have had it rebarreled as I already shot out one barrel, awesome round. 22/250 is about the same thing, also another excelelnt round. I like the 6mm and 257 Wby as well for varmints. I also shoot a lot of 22 long rifle too, it don't have to be ultr-velocity to have fun.
-
LMAO (don't know what that means) :dunno:
Laughing My Ass Off BP ;)
You must have looked up the ballistics,
Don't need to BP, I own one ;)

Weatherby .338 win 200gr BT :o
:yike: Jeez man you must really like horror movies.
-
No I just like to see them flip :chuckle:
-

.250 Savage is my go to gun for varmints, or whatever I can grab first.
Konus pro M30 8.5x-32x52
-
last year in montana shooting praire dogs with the 22-250 was fun but when the boy started shooting the with the 378-338 we got some great areial photos not what you would call a vamint rifle but no cripples either.
-
Remington 700 Sendero .220 Swift. Fluted bull bbl topped with Leupold 4x16. 55gr V-Max. It's a huckleberry!! Lot's of fun to shoot.
-
Those are a couple sweet sounding varmint rifles you guys have......
I have a 8x24 Bausch & Lomb on my pre-64 220 swift, I had it rebarrelled with a match grade SS barrel. Gun shoots better than I can... :chuckle:
huntnphool....I really enjoy the 257 WBY with 75 Gr HPBT, hot loaded at 4000 FPS, disintigrates squirrels or prairie dogs and nearly cuts a coyote in half anywhere under 300 yds. So flat shooting that any coyote is a dead on shot out to 300. You need to go prairie doggin one of these summers in MT with us, we'll blow up some dogs....

Youngest son likes his 6mm Remington for bigger varmints, and the .17 HMR for smaller critters:

He's also done just fine with my .25-06:

I like my .204:

Varmints and Coyotes are great "off-season" quarry... Keeps the eye sharp and gets me afield year 'round. Love it! Fun pursuing the accuracy requirements too...
-
vermin eradication
Guy....I can see you taught your sons well.....
-
Thanks Bearpaw - shooting, hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, and cycling with the "boys" has been a terrific thing for all of us as they've grown. It's been a mighty fine 23 years since the oldest was born - my wife and I started them out young enjoying the great outdoors.
The varmint rifles have been a lot of fun, but they're just a part of the picture. Anytime I can get into the hills or out on a trout stream with one or both of my sons is a real treat.
You guys w/young children, savor those years and make the most of them, they pass amazingly quickly. Soon enough those toddlers are looking you in the eye and are every bit the man you'd once hoped they'd become.
Regards, Guy

I try to shoot a few with each of my varmint rifles each year, but since buying the Ruger ultralight in 204 when it was first introduced, that's my favorite gun. I was suprised at the long range (400-450 yd.) knockdown capability of the gun with a 40 grain bullet. Also, I tend to get quite a bit more from the fur buyer than I did with the 22-250 or the swift. In my opinion, all rifles designed for varmints will do the job if you put the time in learning your gun, your load, and building your overall confidence toward making the shot count.
-
Guy - nice Nightforce on the EBR! I'm just about done building mine - Just ordered the bipod and the Leupold Mark 4. Can't wait to start shooting!

I'm using a Kimber Model 84 in a 22-250. 26" fluted stainless barrel and 2 pound trigger. Topped with a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20 with Varmint Reticle. Shooting 55 grain V-max handloads. Awesome gun. Like Bearpaw said.. the gun shoots better than I can. I've yet to kill a coyote with it but have vaporized some gophers and prairie dogs with it.
-
.223 savage model 10 camoed out.
its pretty dam sexy.
-
i have a stevens model 200, which is a 223 caliber and works wonders on yotes, and crows if they stay still long enough. :P
-
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages40.fotki.com%2Fv1251%2Fphotos%2F0%2F453080%2F7226762%2FDSC02750-vi.jpg&hash=d1674ebb9ed8e8512744cab260bb71b0370a30e5) It's finally done - now I just need to drop some critters.
-
Just ordered a Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine....will get to try that out this winter.
Also have a Colt HBAR AR-15 that is a tack driver too.
223 is cheap, fun and easy to shoot.
-
Hey 5shot what ammo does your colt like best? I can't get mine to group better than an inch @ 100yds with handloads.
-
I have been using either 55 grn Hornady SP's or the equivalent Remington bullet with H335. I have a leupold 4.5-14 on it, which helps.
1" at 100 is damn good though - punching through a grapefruit sized target at 300 will kill just about anything.
When sighting it in, rest it right up next to the mag well and don't put any pressure on the receiver or you will end up putting pressure on the barrel and your groups will suffer.
They really aren't target guns, but still fun and accurate enough.
-
I shoot a remington r-15 with 55grn balistic tip hand loads... i love it.
-
The free float tube on your R-15 makes a world of difference.
I never looked at mine as really a target gun - just something to get the job done. I am sure out to 250 yards I don't have to worry.
-
i got a hell of a deal on a bushmaster AR this weekend that i couldn't pass up. Its only had 40 rounds shot through it. put the scope on today so i can retire my .270 wsm for the year. i did shoot most of my coyotes with my .222 remington mag last year but they dont make ammo for it any more, and reloading brass is hard to find. i want to savor all the ammunition i can for it. wack and stack!
-
That will do the trick....
-
I have a very similar set-up (DPMS AP4 with Swift 4.5-14 mildot)... under an inch with 40 gr
v-max loads.
-
Remington 788 24" Heavy Barrel in 22-250 w/bipod and 52-grain Hornady hollow points.
