Title: decoy setups
Post by: mjtbackcountry on November 19, 2009, 08:07:35 PM
What is your set up or favorite set up for a situation when your hunting anything that is frozen or part way frozen, you can break ice ect. Do you like all floaters or do you use shells and mix in floaters. I had a recent hunt when it got to mid morning the birds wernt coming in all the way, I figured maybe the ice freaked them out. Any suggestions?

I keep a 5', 2x6 that I have tied with a rope that I can hold onto and bust up the ice with it using my foot.  Or if you have an Ice Eater those are great.  I try to clear a hole and use floaters.  I usually will put G & H shells around the edge of the ice similar to what the ducks typically do.  I also use a pole with a bunge attached and keep movement in the spread.  It helps to keep the ice from forming so fast and the birds see movement and it helps bring the closer or helps them commit.  Good luck.
