So im taking a guy hunting this weekend who has never hunted before. We only have Friday (today) sat and have to be back intown sunday afternoon. The plan (or so I thought) was to work thursday night and hit the road asap. we got off work at 4 30 this morning.....it is now after 7 am and shooting light and im sitting at home. why you might ask? my buddies wife gets up at 7 and he has to say bye before he goes. COME ON MAN!!!!!!!!! We still have a 2 hour drive and I have to set up a couple spots. Guess this just turned into a one and a half day trip......do all rookie hunters not get it?

Me too bowhunter. Thats just silly. I would have told him to meet me there. Some people definately don't get it.

I hear you on waiting- it is not worth it unless it is a close family member. Besides, those are also the type of people to get out in the rhubarb for an hour or two and start telling you that they have to be back by a certain time

Been there..done that..But you might want to cut the guy a bit of slack as a first timer. Until he's been out in the woods and felt the things we all experience as hunters..its just a new thing for him, no rush. Its in my mind that we had best make some allowances so we can get the chance to introduce some new hunters.
I am also taking a complete newbie out for late muzzle. We have been out to the range and looking at gear and my guy is excited. We are basically just using my equipment so its a no pain experience and I'm taking him to a place where he has a good chance of at least bagging a doe.
So, your guy..take him, teach him..if he gets the bug he will learn quickly that the wife will be there when you get home. You pack the truck before you leave for work and leave for your area at first opportunity. We only get so many days per year to chase deer, so they are all important.

More for us. Sounds like he might be in trouble with the wife, hopefully its a one time thing.

Yeah, that's bad form. I'm a rookie hunter and if some was so kind to take me under their wing (so-to-speak) I would clearly want to know what the expectations are, then fall in line. Also, all affected parties (e.g. wife, work, others) would clearly know what to expect from me.

over here if you are invited it is considered extremely rude to Use the wife to say no or say you will be late. my wife hates it but thats the way it is. the only real valid excuse generally is that you will already be on another hunt.
If i were you back in the states i would just give him a hard time when he gets done kissing up and take him hunting. everybody gets one.

I got a friend into hunting this year and he impressed the hell out of me. I was giving him a hard time for dragging his feet to complete hunter safety and within a week he had the on-line class done and the 4 hour training class. I couldn't take him out opening weekend or the next few days because i was concentrating on getting my wife on a buck. I really only got to hunt with him for one day. He went out solo 8 days in a row! Unfortunately, he didn't get anyting but he was motivated and worked his ass off. He is going to be a value to the hunting community and I am pleased as punch to call him a partner.

I took a gal with me hunting recently, first time ever hunting. Showed up late, whatever, we'll just do some coyote calling. She yelled "Run doggy run!" When i raised my rifle on one. We ended up going back and all i got to shoot was a squirrel. haha, i can know make fun of her endlessly for that though.

guess i must be dam lucky. i tell my wife i might be hunting over the weekend and she tells me see ya when you get back , hands me $20 for junk and sends me off with some lovin. if the guy had to wait for his wife she is either mean or he is a wussy. :chuckle:

I take alot of different people out.Being late is bad juju..I still would give a guy a second chance..Late for work or hunting dont cut it..as far as a woman goes,as mentioned yelling for an animal to run when I want to kill it...Right turn clyde.....Just kidding

thats weak! man i wouldnt have waited, especially if you are doing HIM the favor of takin him and showin him the ropes, hes on YOUR time, id be grateful that you are taking me and do my best to be on time, be a good listener etc.

Hell with my bud if your more then 15 minutes late hes gone . thats your loss you should of been on time . thats how he sees it.

Well the weekend didnt end up too bad. Didnt get as much hunting in as planned but managed to get a plump doe. It was my first with a bow. Every year i bow hunt i pass up the easy shot early in the year waiting for something bigger and never get crap so I took it this year. 12 yard shot out of a makeshift ground blind i built in 10 minutes the night before. While on my way to find the doe I shot I jumped a 4x4 and a huge 5x5. Also had a monster 5x5 mulie hangout around my treestand for almost two hours. Probably 25 inches wide, very tall and a huge body. So the rookie hunter didnt ruin my weekend. He had fun, learned alot, just needs to learn to tell the wife when its time to hunt its time to hunt
