I was lucky enough to draw a Montana combo tag for elk and mule deer. I had my heart set on mule deer. The guy I drew the tag with left me high and dry. I got away for a 3 day elk hunt where a friend pointed me in the right direction. There were deer everywhere too, but all whitetail.
My question is, is it too late to find a spot and get a Montana mule deer? I'll be by myself and have zero idea of where to go. I was thinking about just heading over to mule deer country and maybe stop in a sporting goods store and see if someone would point me in a direction.
Too late or do you think I could still pull it off?
thanks

Just got back this morning, they are rutting hard and moving a lot. It should be pretty easy if you hit the Broadus area and are not holding out for a monster.

Wow, Broadus huh? I just looked at a map and that is a loooong way over. :yike:
I like the sound of it being pretty easy... Broadus be worth the drive you think?

getting a mule deer in eastern montana is really pretty easy it looks to me like after being over there this year and with all the block management land available to hunt, access is not an issue. Lots of bucks 20" and under and I was pointed in many directions from Jordan to Broadus to Malta all a long drive from Washington. Its to long of a drive for me to just drive over and shoot a deer but to go over and camp and hunt and hang out for a week thats a different story. Good luck if you go. nwhunter

Thanks for the info.
I'm just trying to talk myself into going now. Loong drive, but my first decent mule deer would be nice.
thanks again

HP is right Hunt this area along the river running along the res border. you will find a old burn up high on the ridge to the south You have the chance of findin a great buck up there.
