Title: Cowiche info( late archery elk
Post by: duckfvr on November 22, 2009, 02:52:52 PM: My dad and i are headin to rimrock on thurs. for the late archery elkand we will b there for a week. The rimrock unit my dad and i now pretty good but the cowiche we have never been into and i here that is really good for the late hunt, so my ? is if anyone has any info on a starting point and how much snow is up there any help would b great. I have helped a few on here so now i guess i will ask for some. We plan to camp on the air strip were we alwasy do for the early hunt unless there is to much snow we r kinda going blind for the late hunt we have never hunted late down there.

Post by: jdb on November 22, 2009, 03:09:07 PM: i was in there this morning and on the road there was between 6 and 8 inches of snow. lots of state land on both sides of the cowiche mill road and it holds elk.

I have been wanting to hunt the Cowiche for late hunt but do noot know the area and am a little nervous about going in blind. I know how you fee,l so if i could help i would, but i am in the same boat as you.

I am planning on heading to the Nile area, but normally hunt Rimrock for the late season. I know the Nile better then Rimrock and it seems most of the elk in Rimrock head to the feed stations (oak Creekl or Cowiche) after a few inches of snow.

I do believe the Cowiche area in question is the elk area you are refering to as it is part of the Cowiche Unit.

Do they do this so you cant get so close to the feeding stations?

Headed over tomarrow until the 8th if that what it takes.

Without having the game regs in front of me, the best I can tell you is that it is closed from the powerlines down. They come across down below (east) of the town of Tampico, run across the east side of Pine Mtn., and into the Cowiche drainage. SO THIS EXCLUDES THE TIETON DR. FEEDING STATION. When it hits the Cowiche, not sure if the boundary is still the powerlines to Highway 12 or what. Read the area description. Basically they are trying to keep people from hunting in the feeding stations.

Late elk doesn't crank me up though. Might go Wednesday after I chase birds in the morning. Not sure though. It just doesn't do much for me.

The power lines are the boundary for late elk. So I don't think any of the land on the mill road is open right now. The powerlines on the cowiche side are quiet a ways up the road, basically just after the Y. But then you have to get through all of the Van Wyk land before you get to public ground.

I have only gone up the south fork. Is that where you are talking about? If there is snow after the road turns to dirt, I have noticed more animals. Plus it's easier for tracking.
